Surely this has been asked 100 times, but like I always say ... the search engine brings up everything but what I'm looking for. Sorry in advance for the repeat question. Here goes:
I'm going to teach somewhere in Asia, although maybe somewhere in eastern Europe for a bit first. And then there's that friend of mine embedded deep within that other country over there who's invited me for a visit and a term of teaching.
So how do I swing the cell phone stuff? I had one a few years ago, but threw it away because it seemed extravagant and unnecessary. Now that I'm selling everything I own and moving overseas, it's become clear to me that I'll need a new cell phone ... for safety, convenience, and because mom says so.
Friends from Saudi Arabia have phones they bought in their country and have no problems using here. Granted English is the second official language there, which means both languanges are already programmed on their phones. The local cell phone people aren't any help.
Do I need to buy a new phone each time I arrive in a new country? Are there international phones that accept local plans? I'm an American moving overseas indefinitely. I think some people bring their phones with them when they travel overseas and have no problems using them. So they must be using American phone plans. But ...
But what? What do I need to know?

Pick a country....
Some counties (China, Philippines, etc) use GSM.... if you have an UNLOCKED, TRI-band GSM phone then you just change the sim when you change country.
Some countries (like Korea) have closed CDMA systems and you have to buy a phone locally. Phones are also locked to the local provider so if you want to change companies you have to change phones. |
