Hi!
So, I will be returning to Korea in October to begin working there again. I am currently looking for a position, and might be close to signing up for one. I am hoping to get the visa all sorted out here in Canada before returning to Korea. Now, the thing is, I will fly out of Canada to be in Korea on October 1st, will leave Korea again on the 2nd, for a 2 week trip to Thailand. Then, I will fly into Korea again for my work and to begin using my visa. My question is, will this be a problem with an E-2 visa? I should be able to get a visa that says it will begin on October 17th, right? So, then if I enter Korea on October 1st, will that begin my year allowance in Korea, or will I be able to get a tourist visa for that day? I hope I'm making sense.
Anyways, if you have any information about this, I'd appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Jenn |

It depends..
If your visa is processed in Canada.. that i mean by, if your visa is stamped on your passport before you enter korea. If this is the case then your work visa should start the day u arrive in korea on Oct 1.
However, your leaving for Thailand on Oct 2. So at the airport in korea you'll need to get a multiple re-entry visa at the immigration office.
But you wont have your alien registration card yet because you have to apply for it in korea. But your only going to be in there for 1 day and it takes a week to get your alien registration card.
So, my guess is that you should goto the immigration office at the airport once you arrive and tell them your story. They'll most likely have you pay for the multiple re-entry visa (approx 80 US).
i am not 100% on this, but its what i would do. In any event just see the immigration office once you arrive in korea at the airport and they'll sort it out for you.
good luck.. |

A single re-entry permit is all you will need. It costs 30,000 Won and you can get it at the immigration office at Incheon Airport. The office there does not grant anything but single re-entry permits. So you can't get a multiple re-entry permit there. Unless things have changed....
I'm not sure what the rules are if you haven't been granted an Alien Registration Card yet.
Is there a reason you are going through Korea to get to Thailand? Maybe you should try to avoid Korea so that it doesn't screw up your Visa. Find a flight that links through Japan or something. |

Thanks. I guess they will let me know what to do at immigration at the airport. I am going through Korea because I'm meeting a friend who is going to Thailand with me. My friend will actually have the tickets for Thailand since they are being purchased from Korea. Is there any place to store luggage at the airport in Incheon? If I have to, I could just stay at the airport, but would need a place to put my luggage, I guess. |

You ARE going to have problems. My co-worker had this same problem last summer. She missed her trip to the Philippines because of it.
+They (even at the airport) will NOT give you a re-entry without your ARC.
+You MUST get your ARC from your regional (not the airport) immigration office.
+If you have your E2 processed before you come to Korea and you ENTER through passport control then you will be entered on your E2.
+If you leave for thailand then your E2 (single entry) will be used and you will have to re-apply for a new E2 but you are under contract and cannot get a new E2, so you see the nightmare.
The solution to your problem is to get your E2 stamped into your passport when you are in Thailand.
Get here shouldn't be a problem because you will have onward tickets booked to Thailand so the airline won't hassle you. Get a B2 (visa waiver) stamp in your passport on arrival here.
Meet your friend.
Grab your flight to Thailand. Drop your passport off at the Korean embassy in Thailand as you pass through Bangkok. Enjoy your vacation. Pick your passport up on your way back to the airport.
Come back to Korea on your new E2.
The OTHER choice is to stay in the transit lounge of the airport (not officially enter Korea) and have your friend meet you inside the airport when you are ready to depart to Thailand. |

I really appreciate your help Ttompatz. I won't be able to get the visa in Thailand, since I won't actually be in Bangkok. I will be in Phuket. There isn't a Korean embassy there, is there?
Now.. as far as staying in the transit lounge of the airport. Would that be a problem for getting my seats booked on the new flight to Thailand, and getting seats next to my friend? |

Yes, you will have a problem if you do not have the physical tickets or e-ticket itinerary when you arrive. You will not be allowed to enter the transit lounge/area without it.
If you have the ticket then you can get your boarding pass from the transit desk at the airport. They can seat you next to your friend if he has checked in already.
If you are there first, get your seat and have them note that your friend will be arriving later and you want the seat next to you saved for him. When he checks in they can give him that assigned seat. They CAN deal with arrangements like this. It is not that unusual. Pre-booking of seats is becoming common.
Get him to send you your ticket (October is still a long way away) or get a copy of the e-ticket itinerary. |

Thank you very much for your information. I didn't think this was going to be a problem, since I didn't really think I'd start looking for a job early. But, I now have a job offer, and will probably need to get my visa, or else I will wait and make a visa run to Japan or Bangkok while I'm in Thailand. Now, it all depends on what the school decides to do. Fun, fun. Thanks again. |
