R.I.P. Syd (1946 - 2006). He died last Friday from complications due to diabetes. A bright light goes dark in the world. I'm truly saddened.

Well. He made 60.

Anyone who knew him at a certain time in the late 60's would have been very surprised he would have made 30!!!

I used to have lots of fun with friends drunkenly strumming his wackier songs.

Last weekend, I went to see the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra play the music of Pink Floyd with a fully amped rock band out the front. There was a short abridged Barrett suite which included Bike, Astronomy Domine and Scarecrow. It struck me how poetic and lightly his work rode the bridge between the two genres compared to the heavy overtones of the later Floyd work. I rarely listen to Floyd these days, but if I do it's usually Piper. Got it on right now. SOYCD is far too mournful at the moment.

Well, God rest his soul.

But the best thing that happened to Pink Floyd is when Roger Waters kicked him out of the band and hired David Gilmore.

The truth hurts but deal with it.

Only just heard about this. A big shock, I'm really gutted. Me and two friends went on a Syd-spotting mission in Cambridge two summers ago, which is sad and pathetic but we were in Cambridge anyway due to other business and we're all huge fans so thought "why not?" . Didn't see him.

Syd's music was amazing, even his two post-Floyd solo albums, which were a "nightmare" to record and produce according to Dave Gilmour, who produced them. Gilmour said Barrett kept falling off his stool!

Check out 'The Mapcap Laughs'. Some of the tracks on that album are, to say the least, ahead of their time by 20 years.

Syd: the essentials from Youtube

Jugband Blues live!

Astronomy Domine live! Syd before the breakdown.

The Floyd mime 'Apples and Oranges' live because poor Syd has clearly totally lost the plot, due mainly to a truly monstrous intake of LSD throughout 1965-67 (some of it voluntary, a lot not, since spiking was popular in the 60s - something now regarded as very cruel and downright dangerous. Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac was supposedly never the same ever again after being spiked with LSD.

Astronomy Domine again, but this time live on an English TV program in the 60s. Barrett and Waters are interviewed by the most pompous, annoying tw*t ever, but a seminal vid nonetheless. Clearly Floyd are very upper middle class Cambridge boys.

Keep the Syd vids coming folks!

Syd's first trip

Someone stalked Syd a few years ago and shot this video of him walking home from the shops in Cambridge.

Interstellar Overdrive in 67. Not a huge amount of Syd featured, but it's an interesting look at the scene at the UFO. Video runs for 30 min, and features some short clips of John Lennon. Check out where he stares out the fan while tripping.
