|

Well it all started about 8 months ago. I had been drinking the night before and instead of waking up I was in a halfway sleep. I was aware of all my surroundings but couldnt move or speak. At that moment a black looking being with grey eyes and a grey mouth tried to attach its mouth to my face. I fought it for a couple of seconds and then I woke up. I was freaked out. What the hell was that? Was it real or just a dream? It seemed real, but then again I could of been hallucinating or something.
A couple of days later, I was having a dream, but then I become conscious of my surroundings and I was floating around my bed. Again I woke up thinking about how bizarre the experiance was.
A week or so after the first incident, I woke up and in the paralyzed state noticed a black blob coming at me surrounding me. I eventually woke up.
Every so often I get stuck in this paralyzed sleep. I am starting to wonder what the deal is. I looked on Google and came up with some strange results.
The reason why I wrote this post is to see if any of you had similar experiences or what are some of your weirdest dreams, nightmares that you can remember? I have a few.
One of my deceased Grandmother appearing and saying AHHHH!!!! In a high pitched voice. And then her face became demonic looking.
Another dream I die and transcend to heaven. There were clouds and harps and all that stuff. I was excited because I was in heaven. And I said I am in Heaven!! Then a dark, demonic voice laughed and said, Just Kidding. Then everything turned red as blood. Fire was everywhere and the skin was melted off of all the Angels as they became Demonic creatures.
I know I have some crazy dreams. The Heaven dream happened while I was a senior in high school. The Grandmother dream happened my sophomore year in college.
I won't be shocked to get this thrown at me if I comment on any religious thread or anything controversial. I know I am revealing a weak spot and can come off as a nut job but was wondering what you thought? |

'sleep paralysis'.. or 'old hag syndrom'.
I had it happen somewhat frequently for a few years from around the ages of 20-24.. somewhere around there.
But I know exactly what you are talking about.. I think something like 10% of the population experiences them in their lives. People either sort of think they know what you are talking about and sorta kinda think they experienced them (which means they haven't).. or they know EXACTLY what you are talking about.
In other words, I know exactly what you are talking about.. I've had them as well.. and then started reading everything I could about them.
Do a search for 'sleep paralysis' and 'old hag syndrom'.. there is even an old Victorian novel with an old hag sitting on someone's chest. Kinda interesting. But yeah I've had them. I'll share some of the more vivid/memorable ones later as this thread gets going (if it does). |

I would suggest you have Mrs. Cunningham give you some warm milk and tuck you into bed at night. |

Never experienced it myself, but I saw a TV special about it once, describing your exact problem: a black or grey being trying to suffocate the sleeper, often accompanied by a creepy old lady. Many people experience it.
Creepy stuff.

Yep, there is that classic picture as well.
The Nightmare, by Henry Fuseli (1781) is thought to be one of the classic depictions of sleep paralysis perceived as a demonic visitation. |

I saw this in the wikipedia.
Quote: |
The other thought is a female entity, called Mohini (a demoness from the underworld), comes into the night-time world by means of ascending through a deep well. She is enchantingly beautiful, yet simultaneously horrific, unearthly, and deadly. Like her British Isles counterparts, she also seeks a male lover and human genetic material, presumably for the purpose of bearing a hybrid demon/human child. |
During one of my episodes. I had a dream about a women with pale skin, black curly hair and unique eyes, can't remeber the color now. I was doing something and this lady just showed up in my dream and my initial thought was to have sex with her, but then I stopped and felt something wasn't right and said "I know you!". She had this sadistic grin on her face. At that time I went into that paralytic sleep and thought I saw something move away from me. It wasn't black but something transparent looking. Again I am not saying it was a "demon" or something like that but I thought this experiance was odd.
Thanks for the wiki article it has been helpful. All five reasons apply to me.
Quote: |
Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
Increased stress
Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams |
I certainly want to hear your experiance Tiger Beer. One of the places I googled said a spaceship would show up in 2012 and take us away.

This seems to be very common among Koreans, they call it 가위 눌리다. This came up in one of my adult classes, but I had no idea what to call it in English. I was so intrigued that I started doing polls of my classes, and about half of them had experienced this. Most of them experienced it during their senior year of high school, when they were studying for the college entrance exam. |

When I was about 7 months shy of my 37'th birthday I started having a series of dreams that I was in a fire. A brief history here...I was a flight attendant with Air Canada at the time and I always had the dreams on the road, never at home. At first the dreams were rare and as my b'day approached they became more frequent and the fire was getting closer. It was never just a "I'm in a fire dream", but always the hotel room I was in. I would be sleeping and the next thing I would be standing on the bed with my eyes wide open staring at my hotel room blazing like an inferno. I could hear the roar of the flames and smell the burning curtains etc. I was choking on the smoke and screaming in terror. When I awoke after several seconds the flames would all disappear as in a film running backwards. It got so bad I was afraid to sleep. Close to me b'day I would have these fire dreams several times a night. I literally thought I was going insane. Every dream the fire was closer and more intense. On my 37'th b'day I had the dream for the last time and was standing on my bed burning to death. I could feel my skin burning and my hair ablaze, and my eyes going blind as the fire consumed me. I was finally woken up by the phone ringing, people had called the front desk wondering what the hell was going on in the next room. All they could hear was some guy screaming in agony at the top of his lungs about fire and being burned to death. There I was standing on my bed, soaked with sweat. terrified beyond belief, then trying to explain to the desk clerk that it was all a dream.
Then it was over. I never had the fire dream again. Never. I am convinced I was dreaming of a past life and dying in a fire away from my home.
That was weird beyond belief. I'd like to know if anyone has ever had a similar experience when they think they may have been dreaming of a past life. Or is it all just hooey??? |

When your eyes wake up but your mind is still dreaming and your body is paralyzed, and you have crazy visions but can't react, this is called hypnopompic hallucination. If it happens as you are falling asleep (as opposed to waking up), it's called hypnagogic hallucination.
I had three experiences of hypnagogic hallucination when I was about 12-13 years old. The first was horrifying. I had a bunkbed with a futon on the bottom. The futon was folded up into a couch position. When the hallucination set in, I had a vision of a being standing behind the couch (under the top bunk) laughing at me, pointing, and calling me all sorts of names (coward, etc.) and taunting me, as my bed shook rapidly. It seemed to be shaking so violently that I could hear the metal squeaking on it, and it was hitting the walls. I couldn't move, but "screamed" as loud as I could. My brother, awake in the next room, did not hear me, of course. Eventually, I was free, and ran to his room as fast as possible. Scared him silly, me bursting in like that.
One of the perks of being raised in a superstitious, fundamentalist Christian family is that an incident like this is immediately determined to be an attack by Satan. I was chosen by God for some reason to do some great thing, and Satan was there to scare me off. So, the parents took cooking oil and rubbed it across the frame of my door. It wouldn't be for another 10 years that I found out, by absolute chance, what had actually happened. Btw, my parents don't believe the scientific explanation. They still think it was Satan.
The other two incidents were less intense, but involved attacks by demons. To the young, deluded, Christian boy, these events were terribly frightening.
I think if something like that were to happen to me now, with my awareness of what it is, it could be a fun experience.

I've also heard them called "night terrors". Many have postulated that they are the reason people used to believe in the existence of ghosts, vampires, werewolves, etc.

I think the other posters have done a good job and I'd just like to add:
The Fonz: Could there be some problem that's bothering you unconsciously?
I used to avoid going to the dentist because I was worried about having to have holes drilled in my teeth. I had many nightmares in which my teeth were rotting and falling out of my mouth. I finally went to the dentist. I had a lot of plaque build-up that needed to be scraped away, but no cavities. I stopped having the nightmares and now I go to the dentist every six months without any fears. |

My opinion (based on my wealth of Vedic knowledge - and first-hand experience...) is that you were fighting off a ghost from taking over your body.
There are different classes of ghosts, and some are a lot more powerful than others.
Ghosts are people without gross bodies (usually because of having commited suicide their previous life...) They just have a subtle body (mind) covering over their soul, and they are full of material desires which they can act out only by inhabiting another person's body.
The average ghost can only take over the body of a person in a weakened condition (usually due to intoxication...) They usually enter through the mouth while the person is sleeping. (A person sleeping with mouth open and drueling is an easy target ...)
I've personally experienced being under the grip of powerful ghosts (probably brahman raksasas - demons who target devotees ) - and I had to concentrate all my effort to chant the holy name of KRISHNA! to get rid of them. (Loudly chanting the name "Christ" or any other name of God should also work...)
Other ways of warding off ghosts (and evil spirits...) are to sleep with a light on in the room, have a book of scripture open (like Bhagavad-gita or the Bible...) and light incense ... Many homes in India have special statues, masks (I forget their name) or talismans that are supposed to repel evil spirits and ghosts...
Many drug-users and alcoholics temperarily fall prey to various ghosts who in effect push aside the predominating soul assigned to a particular body and take charge for a while (causing a pronounced personality change...) |

My friend had this happen to him when he came to Korea, and he says that others have talked about it too (not just in Korea).
It happened a couple of times where he would wake up paralyzed, and feel like there was a weight on his chest, and then he could see someone walking across the room to him.
His stories alone were enough to scare me...I can't imagine how I'd feel if it was actually happening to me.
You always have to wonder, though, if ghosts are real, then these things might not just be dreams...especially since they seem so prevalent. |

When I saw that Rteacher was the last person to respond to this thread, I just knew it was gonna be something like this. Good grief, man. On the one hand, we have hard science, backed up by evidence. On the other hand, we have a "wealth of Vedic knowledge", with absolutely no studies or scientific inquiry involved.
No one has EVER proved the existence of ghosts. Why continue to promulgate such absurdities? You are amongst college grads here, not a bunch of hillbillies in India who don't know how to use a condom.

That's because there is no Christ and no Krishna coming to help you. It's your own mind using a ritual to produce physical results. It has NOTHING to do with ghosts and other such nonsense.

I heard you can also take a dump in a porcelain bowl (or Tupperware) and leave it next to your pillow. You should try that one, too.
God people like you piss me off. Why? Because I was raised by people like you, and spent 10+ years of my life suffering from severe mental durress due to my brainwashing that told me a demon was always watching me, always following me. At any moment, Satan could attack. I developed severe psychological problems and had to go through years of therapy to reverse this kind of crap that tortured my mind. Yes, people that spread this ridiculous garbage piss me off. It's not just harmless fun. |
