It came to me this morning in the shower: I finally understand my job at the university-- maybe even ESL teaching in Korea! It was so simple...
A man hires you to dig ditches for a highway. The pay is pretty good and the hours fair. In the morning, you dig the ditch. In the afternoon, you are ordered to fill it in. In the evening, you are paid. When you go to town the people complain that the highway's no closer and it's because of the lazy and stupid ditchdiggers. Nevertheless, you keep digging and filling and being paid, and one day when you quit the road is still not much closer to the town.
What type of ESL ditch digger are you?

I don't fill my ditch back in...if the boss wants to fill it in, that is his choice....
Sorry, but your analogy doesn't hold true...now if you want to talk about moving the ocean a bucket at a time, or bringing the desert to the seaside a grain of sand at a time, I might be with ya...but there is nothing I do that undoes my own work...other folks mess with it, a'course.... |
