Hi All,

My ARC hasn't come in yet, but I'd like to get a phone this weekend (read: today). I have a Korean credit card and a long-standing bank account (more than a year). Can I buy and activate a card phone without my ARC/Passport?

Has anyone actually done this, or is an ARC mandatory no matter what?

Thanks in advance...

I did it last year with my passport at an SK shop in Itaewon.

For a card phone you MUST have either your ARC or your passport. One of them is required. Koreans must have their ID-card.

...In 2003 I was in the same situation. Near the close of the sale, I told the phone people that I was in process and didn't have photo ID. They made me promise to bring by a copy of my passport or ARC once I got it. Then they made a copy of someone else's passport photo and stuck it on my application. Dressing nice and seeming to be a newbie definitely helped. Good luck!

Yes, I got one with only a passport. I said I was a tourist...and it was true!
