For those following the Changnyeong-gun public school re-signing fiasco -
My current contract expires July 31.
It's almost unbelievable, but today (July 12) I was shown my 'new' contract (I'm not surprised but, no raise... nothing), and my 'new' contract starts September 1.
A month off... sounds good... doesn't it?
However, the kicker is - the boss/school district expects me to be back working on August 22, i.e. to work the last eight 'working days' of August for free. The rationale?... because the contract states (verbatum... there are no mistakes or typos in the following quote) -
"But the Employee is required to go through a training program before starting a couple of weeks ago. So to speak Aug. 18"
It appears one of the "many bonuses" for re-signing, promised by the boss last May, is knocking two days off my unpaid 'training program'.
It's been nice knowing you. Barring a miracle, I'll be out of this loonie bin of a country on, or shortly after, the first of August. |

So one bad contract makes the whole country a looney bin?
Good riddance. Don't let the kim-chi hit your ass on the way out of the country. |

Sorry to hear about your predicament. It sounds suspiciously like what I've been going through with them for the last 2 months.
I will mention that the contract I signed and the contract they sent in to Immi were not the same contracts. |

You're supposed to negotiate it, not just accept it. These things are sent to try you, not literally knock you out.
Anyhow...where to next monkey? |

According to the boss, the contract is non-negotiatable because I work for a school district.
The following 'little gem' was sent by email to foreign teachers in the district -
"I am sorry not to tell you so earlier without any excuse
We have a plan to held a meeting with your pricipal and teacher together about the contract renewal.
So Now I couldn't say anything about the results.
However, I will try ... (sorry for your frustration)
Please understand our side- public education
If we raised some, even little, the private institute would be angry and get the higher payment than now-----and at the end, the payment for foreign teacher in Korea would be getted the inflation. Whole part of Korea, that's not good.
So we should talked the matter into the negotiation with people who are related.
So give us a break.
You might think that's natural to get a raise for another next period.
But that simple thing make problems because we are very first special education district in Korea.
Many province/city/county now copycat of us.
So we feel that is very sensitive, so we need restraint to mention that matter now.
I feel sorry for you. But Please understand us...
Sorry for late answer..(withous any excuse)"
They really think we're that stupid! |

Are you always a git or is this something that only hits you on the random Wednesday evening when you haven't been laid in 6 or 8 months? Or longer. |
