A concept album (thanks floaty!) is one in which the songs are unified by some theme, either musically, lyrically, or both. Maybe cohesive record isn't the right word. If it's not, let me know please.

Some of my favorites:

The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium

Cursive - The Ugly Organ

Masta Ace - Disposable Arts

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

That one by Masta Ace is one of the most creative hip hops albums I've ever heard. Definitely worth a listen.

Your turn!

I -- surprisingly -- loved My Chemical Romance's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. It's surprising because I normally abhor emo, but the piece What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison was different (especially the beginning hook), creative, and catchy, among other things.

I've heard a great deal of good things about Mars Volta. Someday I may be compelled to check them out.

I believe they are called Concept Albums and the best one in the history of the world is OK Computer. So don't even bring up that Pink Floyd crapoliola, Spin.

John Wesley Harding claims that The Confessions of St. Ace isn't about the breakup of his marriage and start of a new relationship, but I think it is. Is it a concept album if it is the listener who sees the concept, not the creator?

Marillion - "Clutching at Straws" was thoroughly depressing, but perhaps their finest hour with Fish. Truly a masterpiece.

The most obvious to me is Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. The songs all ingeniously blend into one musically and thematically. The theme is causes of anxiety - money, aging, mental illness, fear of death. A cohesive album musically - whereby a point is made via the music only - is Deep Purple In Rock. The point being made is deafening bloody noise. It's the first real heavy metal album. Sadly Deep Purple in these early years were too loud and brutal for the technology available in 1970 and the recording is very poor, but that somehow adds to the appeal.

Dark Side of the Moon was definitely an awesome concept album.

Haven't checked the others mentioned thus far, but I will tomorrow. I love concept albums.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. And wait a minute, nobody's mentioned Sgt. Pepper's?

I thought 'misplaced childhood' was better. Marillion were the kings of concept albums for a while! Wink

One of my all time favourite concept albums.

Future Sound Of London's "ISDN" album

Still stands the test of time as far as my ears go. Genius.

Very underrated band Marillion. Like Dire Straits, they're one of those immensely talented bands that have some kind of untrendy, 'middle aged-guy-music' stigma and people slag them off without knowing ANYTHING about them.

If you liked that, definitely check out his follow-up, A Long Hot Summer, which is better.

Although they did release some questionnable material, particularly when they were talking about pagan gods, grendel, garden parties and crying jesters. Gotta love it though....

Look, I expect this from Cubanlord, but you're skating onto thin ice. Do I ever *beep* with your username?

Yeah definitely. I don't know if it's a concept album, though. Definitely good. Btw, if you like Masta Ace, you probably like MF Doom, huh.
