Well, I just wasted half my day filling out forms and waiting in line at the police department! As a warning to all Canadians, bring AN EMAIL STATING YOU NEED A CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK from your school before trying to get it done. They won't do it for you otherwise.

I know lots of people will have to get this done soon, and I don't want you waiting in line, like I did, while some crazy guy is telling the whole place about our city getting taken over by demons. So, there goes my day... woo hoo.

Mad

You mean you were trying to obtain a check at a Canadian police departent? Or do you mean a Korean police station?

It's not a requirement to get a job here. It depends on your director/principal. EPIK usually demands one. Are you part of EPIK?

I had no problem getting one from the RCMP (who police my city). Went in, filled in the forms, got one. No problem.

Actually I got one here in Korea fairly easily. I went down to the police station and had it written down in Korean what I needed. Walked right in and talked to one of the men there. I had to fill out a form and wait about 15 minutes and he brought me a form with an offical stamp on it.

I think he's probably getting one in case he needs it to teach in Canada. They can do one in Canada, but if he's been in Korea for a period of time then they won't be able to tell if he has committed any crimes while abroad.

I found it very easy to get one in Korea. I had someone write out in Korean what I wanted and it took about half an hour at the police station.

Yes, I was trying to obtain one at a Canadian police department in Vancouver (the Main & Hastings branch, ugghh)... maybe the girl there was just a *****.

And no, not part of EPIK.

Perhaps it is different if you are applying in an RCMP office instead of a "local police" station? The RCMP don't patrol Vancouver, the Vancouver police do. Should I go next door to Burnaby if it's easier, I wonder...??

Trying to get it done from korea is a monumental pain in the rear. You need a couple of days to waste, being bounced from A to B and driving around getting stuck in traffic jams.

Compounded if it gets returned: be warned, you can only get one if you have actually lived in the jurisdiction of your police dept within the last 10 years. if you've been travelling the world in that time you may as well not exist.

Brento..I had one of those done in Canada 2 years ago and it took all of 15 minutes.

I showed up with all my IDs, went to the desk at the Cop shop, was sent to an office and an officer did the records check right then and there....

You must be unlucky... Laughing

As for criminal records check becoming more common that is true and I will ad that I think this is a good thing.

I had it done from Korea. I just mailed the local police and told them where I wanted it sent and I got it a couple of weeks later. Then again I lived in a small town where everybody knows everybody else....

I don't know about that 10 year rule, I haven't lived there for 12 years and I still got it...are you American or Canadian?

Ah ha, you went to the Main & Hastings branch. Well, there's your problem right there.

Do you HAVE to go to a specific location or something? If not, what were you thinking going THERE? I do believe the officers in that particular location have a few better things to do with their time.

i do occasionally fondly reminisce about the afternoon suds at the Astoria, though...

The Vancouver City Police (ie. the mayor's personal police army) are the problem. Get one from the RCMP and it'll take 5 minutes to fill out the form and you can pick it up the next day.

Most public schools now require a criminal record check...as any decent school should.

Hello all.
I havent' lived in Canada since '89, though I lived in the US for more than ten years until 4 years ago. Does anybody know if I would have to get the record check from the US, or is it best to just not ask?
