How do you turn a paperclip into a house?
| Quote: |
EXACTLY one year ago today, at 12:48am, a 25-year-old Canadian called Kyle MacDonald sat down at his computer in Montreal and uploaded a picture of a red paperclip on to his web page. "This might not surprise you," he wrote above it, "but below is a picture of a paperclip. It is red." MacDonald went on to explain that he wanted to trade the paperclip for something bigger. "Maybe a pen, a spoon, or perhaps a boot." He was, he said, "going to make a continuous chain of 'up trades' until I get a house. Or an island."
Today, MacDonald will make the ultimate trade up from that original red paperclip when he takes possession of a three-bedroomed, 1,100-square-foot, white clapperboard farmhouse at 503 Main Street, Kipling, Saskatchewan. |
Dang, that is crazy, I know the house is in Saskatchewan, but this is crazy... First he traded for a wooden fish pen, then a doorknob, then:

| momentum increased, as word spread online. The doorknob became a camping stove, then a generator, which was swapped for a beer keg and a Budweiser sign. A skidoo came next, followed by a trip to the Canadian Rockies, then a shiny white supply truck. Finally he hit paydirt when a recording contract with a Canadian band was put on the table. |
It always amazes me how the internet can lead to such amazing stories...so, start thinking up the next one..... |

Fourteen trades, that included an afternoon w/ Alice Cooper, a 12 months rent free in Phoenix and a movie role in a Corbin Bernsen flick. Bernsen did not want a 12 months free in a Phoenix duplex, and told the guy that if he ended up with something he wanted in trade, then he could trade for the movie role. Apparently, Corbin Bernsen likes snow globes. So, snow globe becomes movie role which becomes a house. The town of Kipling told him they might do an American Idol style audition for the role.
It was on WBUR (my local NPR) station today.
Pardon me while I shuffle off to find a red paper clip...I want to own a house some day. |
