Given 1 week at the end of July / beginning of August. Which would you choose or recommend? I'm not into beaches really, looking more for cultural experiences, sight seeing, experiencing new things. Budget is of some consideration, I'd like to stay in the US$20-30/day range.

cheers

Really? I thought all of those places were pretty inexpensive. I can afford more, but I usually travel cheaply.

Sorry, I wasnt really helpful. Just seemed to me if youre going to the expense of travelling to any of those places, it didnt make a lot of sense to be too stingy. Nice to let the experience dictate the costs rather than vice versa, if you can.

True though, more budget lodgings always offer up more interesting experiences. Whichever place you choose, have a great trip!

Mongolia is expensive - you end up needing a guide at $50 a day. Each person, not a group.

Hmm, according to whom? I've just started my research, but haven't seen anything about this. Americans don't even need a visa, so it's not like you have to go through their tourist bureau. Is this from personal experience?

With that budget.. probably Indonesia.

Malaysia its like $3-5 for a beer.. so if you did any socializing at all.. then no hostel or food for the day.

For indonesia?? Not really.

Malaysia, it is do-able. well 30 bucks/day, not 20. Won't be drinking much though, for the reason TB mentioned.

Yea, personal experience. I have never been to Mongolia but I have been trying to go for 3 years and every year the cost puts me off. You can hang in UB for cheap if you want but going out to the country almost always means a guide. Fishing, horsebackriding, getting around - you need a guide. There is almost nothing in Mongolia but space, almost too much and thus you end up needing a guide.
