I met mine my 3rd day in Korea. I was moving into my apartment and she was friends with the teachers I was replacing and she was over paying their bills for them. She also worked at the school I worked at and was good friends with all my co-workers and would always come out with us. Anywas, we only worked together for the first week and a half I was there and then she stopped. Still saw her from time to time if we went out to Hongdae or wherever because my friends were her friends, and then about 7 months after I moved to Korea, she set me up with her friend on a date (it ended up with her friend going to the hospital because I beat her for being terrible at English....... or she may just have had food poisoning) and then it was just the two of us. The next day I wanted to go to COEX because I had never been before and she came with me and we started dating that day. I always wonder what would have happened if her friend had not got food poisoning that night, but I really think it would have ended in a menage a trois anyways, and then ultimately moving to Utah, so I guess it worked out for the best the way it did. Anyways, it's been almost a year and a half now and we live together, originally to her parents chagrin, but then to them buying me some of my furniture.

I've had two real relationships in Korea, and both started in the classroom with my assistant teachers. I was reluctant in both cases, but of course was poisoned by soju. Anyways, I hope to avoid this in the future. I'm just trying to analyze the trends in order to be more careful and discerning in my future endevours. I know that online dealios tend to be hit and miss. In China they want husbands and have professional pictures taken that look nothing like them. In Korea they want English practice and have photos taken with a camera phone on the subway with their cheeks puffed out. Has anyone figured out why they do that? The ones who put adds in printed material......best to avoid. The ones you meet in the clubs/bars.......doomed to fail (for some reason any girl I've met in Itaewon I can't lose the "we met in Itaewon" feeling for). The ones in Hongdae...usually to much "holla" and "ma frens" and "bling" for my tastes. The ones you meet at the schools....seems they have been "recycled" at times. With out a word of a lie, I knew a guy who replaced a guy working at a school, and not only did he take over the dudes apartment, and buy his furniture off of him, but he also ended up taking over the girlfriend/co-worker within a span of two weeks. Brutal.

Next time around, I hope to meet a nice young lady while walking in the park. Perhaps I will be feeding pigeons while sitting on a park bench, and she will sit next to me, and be reading the Da Vinci Code in English, which will spurn a converstation that will cause our eyes to flutter. And then we will go and eat some spicey food, and she will commend me on my chop stick skills.

Aaaaah.....the memories.

I mean, there is a certain stigma getting a gf using internet but we do not have much social structure to meet people like locals do. We did not go to the middle/high-school here or university. We do not have a cousin here who went to say Ewha and has friends, etc. So when you just arrive you don't know many people.

Also, in most cases, foreginer speaks english korean girls speak korean. So like 80-90% of girls you find attractive you can't even speak to. From the rest, you gotta weed out players, liars, "english practice" types, "curious ones", cheaters. And then ending up with the good one.

Dating co-workers is probably a good thing to do or some friend she introduced you to because they are "screened" or something, but sure there are some cases (like previous poster saying a replacement teacher replaced more than an apartment) which are bad.

If you try to go the other way and try to make a big social network and circle with mixed genders you end up meeting jelous korean guys who will rather die than introduce someone to you. I mean, would you introduce a competitor to some good looking girl? Especially a "foreigner" to a sweet and innocent "virgin"?

And even Koreans, they meet usually through university-club connection (like the guy works now but as a senior visits his film club and meets some senior/junior) or through connections already said. Or there are even Daum/etc "village clubs" where young people living in a dong register and go drinking together, etc. So many of my K friends found gf/bf like that both long term and short term ones Very Happy And some of my co-workers met using online korean chatting sites as sayclub or skylove. Some even married and have kids.

And yeah, Itaewon/Hongdae does represent nice eye-candy but gets a bit tiring. Always same type goes there, except a few execptions here and there. Which is fine, but........sometimes really I guess walking in the park and sitting next to a person reading Da Vinci code works better.

As a foreigner with limited networking, living in a society where its harder to meet other people of same status and background (aka. lots of foreign single females), with limited or no language ability to take matters in your own hands in everyday life, finding activities and expand the dating pool, and with people that you do not know if are your friends or leechers its kind of hard to meet someone to stick with and be trully happy.
That may be one of the reasons why people do not settle down here in large numbers. I mean, loosing youth and 20s for what? Kimchi?

Yeah, I live by the internet especially in the cloak and dagger world that is gay korea but I can't say enough, I am shallow and I like to know all the important bits first and then meet people who share similar interests as me. The internet facilitates this nicely.

As for settling down, Not in korea. Why would I settle down here where I can never even introduce my partner, screw that. We'll move to Canada or Europe where we can live a normal life.

my first school had it in the contract, very clearly, that dating co-workers was forbidden and was grounds for firing. we kept it as best a secret as we could but nah....the ajumma gestapo busted me all over the place. e mart especially. my boss kinda didnt seem to like it but he ignored it. i think he was happy just to have at least one teacher that was unlikely to do a runner. i wonder if directors ever hire hot korean co-teachers knowing that its just one more thing that might keep us distracted from thoughts of bailing haha. clever marketing if so.

I registered on two different web sites to see what kinds of responses I'd get. On one, I put a normal picture of myself. On the other, I put up the worst photos I could find.

Got tons of responses from ugly or average girls on the one with the normal picture. Got just a few responses from average to beautiful girls on the site with the ugly pictures. Hehe.

So, I ended up meeting up with one of the responses to the ugly pictures, from a girl who shares the same birthday as me. I didn't even see her picture before meeting her. I just thought it would be interesting to meet.

Now, a few weeks later, we're still dating. We've gone out several times and have a really great time together. She's ideal for me.

A warning (or perhaps inspiration?), though: a lot of the girls who contacted me on those web sites seem like they're slutty. I think they go on there to hound foreign guys, so it might be similar to going to Itaewon to find a girl.

There I go, perpetuating the myth that girls who date foreign men are slutty. Shocked

Well, perpetuating the myth that k girls that hook up with foriegners on the net are slutty anyway...

My current gf was a student, and in fact still is! I would never do this as a uni teacher, but I work in a private academy so I have no problem with it. I won't say too much, but this one feels like it could be the one...
