|
|
i have some particularly bad 4th graders who are really naughty and no reprimands seem to work
i have tried the arms in the air
send the kid out of class
writing the name on the board and counting how many times they speak korean and misbehave and none of this works
what can i do...there are only 2 or 3 that ruin this class and make the other kids misbehave as well
any tried and true advice would be appreciated
cheers

set one on fire, or...
stab one in the head with a pencil, or...
suffocate one with a plastic bag.
the rest will behave. |

Or,
Just be aware that it will take awhile for them to step into line and get with the programme.
Be patient, and be consistent with your expectations for their behaviors. |

It took me 6 months to tame some of my more unruly classes. One particular class when I first started was a fucking mess from the day I walked onto the place, and was still a fucking mess the day I left it.
Look seperate the trouble makers the minute they come into class, and expect to boot one of them out. This way they can not feed off each other's stupidity in class. Then make sure you randomly reward desired behaviors from anyone at anytime during your classes.
Some folks are big about stickers and crap, but I never will and never have bribed a kid to behave. Not my thing, but sometimes some sort of sticker chart for good behaviors can work as well. A certain amount of stickers will get you a prize.
Remember start out generous, but get stingy with the stickers as you force them to behave more.
Last be friendly to the little bastards outside of class. That way they do not have the excuse of, "teacha hates me." |

Before I forget, and while I am on a tear here a few other suggestions.
1) start class with a quick activity that even a stumbling retard could get right. This way they are starting class on a successful note.
2) Break your activities in class down into smaller sections. Between sections have some quick fun little activity to liven things up a bit.
3) If they really act the fool then punish the whole class with hands up, and keep doing it. Either the kid will stop, or get his ass beat down by the rest of the class after school. |

I have always done this, but I never thought about why (just making a warmer/warm up). That is a perfect reason to do it. I never thought about it that way |

| I pull my phone out and tell them I'm going to call their mom and dad. Get the phone number for heavier emphasis, learn how to say a few things in Korean... it usually doesn't go any farther than just breaking the phone out... plain and simple. |

When I taught at a K-6 hogwan I tried various things including the yellow card#1 (first warning) - yellow card#2 (second warning...) - red card - (sent or dragged out of class to the scary Korean director who would scream at them and/or call their parents...) It seemed to work for a while then I'd try something else.
One unorthodox technique I used that actually threw the hell-raisers off their game was to praise the bad kids whenever they did something bad instead of showing that I was upset with them. It seemed to confuse them enough to stop acting-up for a while, and bright kids would appreciate the humor of it ...
Sometimes, if I saw that a relatively bright kid was misbehaving out of boredom while I focused on helping slower students, I'd let them play the role of teacher (I'd coach them a little to get 'em started...) and they often did a pretty good job (compared to me anyway...) getting the class's attention. They'd even mimic my yelling "Quiet!" to noisy students - and they'd give out yellow cards...
In some classes where the majority of students were rowdy I think I often just gave in and catered to whatever they wanted to do... I ended up buying about every EFL game and CD- Rom (like the whole "I-Spy" series ...) ever sold in Korea... Doing lots of drawing and art projects - like making posters as a group - also minimized the influence of numerous troublemakers since practically all students enjoyed doing those activities... |

Pop a cap in one of em in the opening minutes..Continue with the lesson as if nothing happened.
They'll be sweet after that. |

As a third grade teacher, I can relate.
I suggest that you schedule a 5-10 minute game at the end of each class or each hour and if they misbehave and have to be removed from the group for the class portion of the class, they are not invited to play along. |

| It all depends on how much support you get from the K-staff. If you can keep them late or get KTs or the director to punish them (or care to do it yourself) or call their parents give it a try. If you can't go that route just throw them out and worry about the good ones. In my experience 90% of kids' behaviour depends on the institution. |
