You don't have to wait.
This machine blows any i-pod out of the water and you're in the right country to buy one.....ahem, the only country.

If you are looking for a player that is 50 times what iPod even aspires to be and currently has 80gb and 100gb options, check out the Archos AV700. Google it! |

Firefly kicks ass. Rock on, dude. Or dudette, if yer a chick.
Anyway, to the OP. Right now Apple is offering up to a 60 gig player that will run you about $400 USD, but since we're in Korea, probably add at least an additional 50 to that, which will hold approx. 15,000 songs. If you've got more than that on your harddrive, I salute you.
Now, if having the latest and greatest is your thing, and you want an iPod, they're expected to be releasing a new one in time for the holiday season. So if you want to wait, there you have it. iPod's rock.

The Archos and the V-45 look good but I'm also interested in the Sony PSP. It has the games of course, plus the expandable memory. I believe there's also GPS software that you can get for Korea. Can also be used for DMB, I believe.
Another option would be the I-River. |

Screw iRiver, they are light years behind lots of the other companies that are putting out PMPs these days, mainly because the OS and software that they put on their devices sucks (for RAM based mp3 players, they are cutting edge, but not in the area of PMPs).
Don't go with a PSP. I'll tell you why: 1.) if you want to play mp3s, the player software has received a lot of criticism and the memory chips are a proprietary format by Sony that are very expensive and only in 1-2 gb capacities (you can get more bang for your buck in this area just by getting a basic mp3 player), 2.) to play movies on it, you either need to use a PSP disk that is also a proprietary format, expensive, and region coded, or put it on a memory card (again... EXPENSIVE), and then possibly have codec problems when you try to play it. 3.) the iStation v43 has an excellent mp3 player, will play any movie you throw at it, can play DMB broadcasts, and since it uses a Linux OS, it can be modded to play pirated or backed-up games from most of the consoles on the market right now. There are also a load of other reasons to go with iStation, including excellent text viewing functions, picture viewing, a dictionary console, an excellent hdd capacity, the biggest LCD touch display on the market (tied with the Archos AV700 and the DVX-pod7010 with 7"), and GPS navigation options.
There are comparable players to the v43, but without the DMB capabilities. They include the Cowon A2, the Creative Zen Vision (the Creative Zen Vision: M is more iPod-like and more portable - BUT BETTER THAN AN iPOD by any stretch).
The Archos AV700 has no DMB, but it is the only player on the market that will actually record video directly from any playback device. |

Uh-huh. Let's see. A 20-30 GB HD vs. the iPod's 60GB yet thicker and bulkier than the iPod. Yep, sure "blows any ipod out of the water"
Craigwalsh you can check out local prices here.

But if a small ipod device isn't your thing save your money and maybe just go for a small notebook computer rather than that istation piece of junk.
I agree, tried a few others and ipods rock. |

The cult of Mac has spoken!
Why does anything and everything about mp3 players always have to turn into an iPod vs. everything-else-on-the-market pissing match? For one thing, lots of people are looking for the extra functionality that is encompassed in players like the v43 and unavailable in the iPod. In fact, iPods and those players are not even in the same market class since iPods are ever mp3 players with a few things added into the mix to make it look a little cooler while players like the AV700, v43, A2, Zen Vision, DVX-POD7010, etc. are actually Portable Media Players (PMPs), and for a completely different user base.
For a growing number of consumers who want their players to have extended functionalities, the iPod just doesn't cut it. It's not a slight against iPod that they need something different.
If I was paid everytime I met someone who bought an iPod because they didn't know what else there was out there, I would be a wealthier man!
Let people see what's out there and let them make their own decisions about what they want and need. |

Sounds good. Now why don't you help the OP who was asking for info on where to price IPODS, if his preference is ok with you, that is. Twit. |

What's interesting however is that what is starting to dawn on some cell phone companies is that people don't want a device that can do everything and make you popcorn. They're getting tired of having to fumble their way through all the menu's that are usually confusing and overly complicated. Apple itself ran in to that problem with their iTunes phone. All these devices that can do "so much more" are essential spouting worthless functions if no one wants them. They want their phone to make calls and their mp3 player to play music or maybe watch a movie. And, since Apple is currently in talks with some Hollywood studios to begin offering movie downloads through iTunes, they're on top of that one as well. With all the features these other players are offering though, it would be easier to buy a laptop. You're essentially paying half the price (or roughly the same price if you were to purchase a low-end Dell or other brand) and getting a fraction of the screen size and other user capabilities that come with a full computer.
Now, if he's looking for something that can do all the other things, then maybe that's a good deal. But if he just wants an Mp3 player to play his tunes, is simple to use and does it very well, then the iPod is one of the best you can buy.

Looks like i sparked off a bit of a debate over the weekend.
Well me reason for just wanting an ipod is the fact i have an ipod speaker dock, ipod ir remote and all the other bits and pieces, the only problem is the 15gig ipod i have attatched to it and the 45gig's of music i cant fit on!
So im wanting a large mp3 player so i can store all that music plus anything in the future and i have started playing with video stuff so a bit of storage and playback on screen would be cool.
As for suggestions for a PSP, well i have gone the route of nintendo for games and have DS, but i also have a pocket pc, for which i have a 1gig SD card so i can watch movies on it, amongst other things!
Thanks for all the wicked suggestions for new players, i think they only thing that would tempt me away from an ipod would be one of the windows media centre type players that creative started to make, but they would need to lose a lot of bulk first!
If you have any more keep em coming!

Showing any kind of preference to Apple is like showing support for the U.S. on this forum. It opens you up to attacks from all sides. Then they blame the Mac users like it's our fault they scream at us that were stupid for using any Apple product. It's quite bizarre. As I pointed out in another thread, this happens with practically no other product on the market.

That's completely untrue and actually shows that you are thinking about this much more than we are. Liking Apple shows support for the US??!!! Jeez. I've heard it all now.
I think Apple make medium quality well-styled products. But you cult members think things like the i-pod are fashioned by the gods and give the user instant super-cool status. Which is actually quite weird because most of the people I see with i-pods are quite nerdy types (and no. I've nothing against nerds!!). |
