Well CLG's summer vacation is going well so far. However some random thoughts come to mind.

1. How can Cambodians get 'foreign' food so right and Koreans get it so wrong? I had a melt-in-my mouth corrisant with coffee for breakfast today that was superior to anything I've had in Seoul (including the Hyatt). Clearly colonisation by the french isn't all that bad.

2. Why did the Korean christian missionaries on the plane over bring a CASE of soju with them. Has baptisim changed since I've last been to church?

3. It is nice to walk down a crowded street without being bumped into, isn't it?

4. What's with Asian tourists/Khmers wanting to take pictures with me? I was walking around the royal palace and got asked at least 5-6 times. Weird.

5. Why is that no matter how carefully I apply my sunscreen, I always manage to miss a spot?

Feel free to answer/flame away.

Colonization by a European power.

The English left behind infrastructure (railroads), governmental institutions and a legal framework.

The French left behind baguettes and wine.

As a blue-eyed, blonde-haired child growing up in Hawaii, I experienced that a lot. My parents were asked constantly by Asian (usually Japanese) tourists if they could take pictures with me. Sometimes they'd reach out and touch my hair with no warning. I remember sort of feeling like a celebrity and sort of feeling terrified.

I hope you're having a great time in Cambodia. I'd love to hear your reflections when you return (or as you travel).

how did you know it was missionaires who brought the stuff? There are a ton of Korean resturants in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the best place to watch Korean package tourists at their worst

Was in India about 7 years ago, walking around the Konorak Sun Temple near Puri in Orissa state when I was approached by a hoard of Bengali tourists and asked to pose for photos with them. Some even asked for a signature. I guess being 6'8", blonde haired and blue eyed in the land of people who are dark and small is something exotic. A similar thing happened at Borobadur in Java in 2003 as well.
