Today I was called to the school directors office.
She asked me if it was true that I had to take pills for depression. I told her I do take pills, but it doesn't cause me any problems and doesn't interfere with my work. But to them it doesn't matter. They can't hire me, because if the parents were to find out, all of the students would be withdrawn and the school would be shut down. It's a reputation thing.
She was really sympathetic and said she understood, and it was unfair, but someone who takes psych meds cannot work in Korean schools with children. Not just foreigners. Everyone.
The information is apparently attached to my visa. When they went to get me a work visa the immigration office told them.
Before I came to Korea I *told* my recruiter that I had to take pills for depression. They assured me it would be no problem what so ever. But hey we all know recruiters lie their asses off.
I have to be out of my apartment by Monday. |

Get a letter of release, and go around Seoul. You can find a job no problem, though i wouldn't bring that up again. The job might not be as good, but you can find one in no time. |

Why did you tell anyone?
At any rate, I wouldn't take their word for it. Korean employers often use 'the law' when they can't come up with a legitimate excuse. |

I must admit, I was curious about this too. There is no easy way to ask this, but is there some physical problem in which they wouldn't have liked you. I mean outside of the "foreigner" image they have. Dreadlocks, beard, not white, etc etc... It might be anything and that is an excuse. Don't worry about it though, you can get another job easy and they are not worth worrying about. You could probably fight it, but boy would the next year suck. |

I read this and I am calling it BS. Why should immi be concerned?
If they are... go to a doc's and get a complete check up - give that to the immi to show that you have a clean bill of health. |

Look....this school has just royally srewed you over because there is something about you that they don't like OTHER THAN THE DEPRESSION MEDICATION THING.
Thats just a lame excuse they have come up with to get you out, as another poster said...do you have any distinguishing characteristics that set you apart from joe blow average?
I have worked over here with guys who are getting prescribed VALIUM from the young korean girls at work who's mom is a doctor.
Theres something really suspicious about that school man.
Anyways...keep all medical stuff on the downlow...don't tell anyone! |

| I recall that you had some other problem with your employer recently regarding that they gave you an unfurnished apartment. I think they are using the medication issue as an excuse to see you off. It's very unfortunate, but I would also suggest that you seek alternative employment and don't divulge the information about your medication. Good luck. |

I told them because when I called the Embassy they told me that it's difficult to get ahold of depression medication in Korea. There aren't very many doctors who can distribute western medication. The recruiter set up my doctors appointment, and said it wasn't any big deal.
When I got to Korea and found out the multitude of things she'd lied about, and I wanted to be released from my job, she immediately used my medical situation to threaten me. She said if I didn't stay with the school and do what they told me to she'd "tell everyone about (my) disease"
When I applied for a new job I didn't tell them because I had the medication situation squared away. They found out through the immigration office. |

| Go to a different part of korea and you will deal with a new immigration office. Also keep it on the downlow from your so called recruiter/nazi. |
