Students Open to Premarital Sex
Eight or nine out of 10 Korean university students have an open mind toward sex before marriage.

"I don't think the trend is only for university students, many of my university juniors already had sexual relations when they were in high school or even in middle school," Back Sang-yeop, a male university student said.

A female student identified as Ko said, "As a growing number of female students go overseas to study apart from their parents, they are more vulnerable to liberal sexual relations."

I'm not at all surprised that this is true for university students, but I am surprised at this:

While this is, of course, the norm in Canada (my part, anyway), I was told by an ex-girlfriend that no one in Korea has sex before university except a few really "naughty" ones.

How would they find time for sex? They spend all day in school. I have heard that some children go to school until 10PM at night.

Strange that they would do a "nation-wide" survey of only 554 students, and then try to generalize based on the findings. I thought this was strange, too:

"Nearly 31 percent of the respondents said they had had sexual relations _ 39.4 percent of males and 22.7 percent of females. "

As far as I know, sex requires two people, but look at the enormous disparity. This leaves three possibilities:

1. A lot of women are lying.
2. The girls that are having sex are really getting around, whereas the guys are not.
3. The survey was poorly conducted.

I'd love to see the methods they used for this survey.

Sexual relations isn't just full sex... it covers a broad spectrum of things...

I don't know how the US is, but a lot of people in the UK were starting up with different sexual practices around the age of 14...

my husband told me that about 10 years ago, there were three middle school students (2 guys and a girl) who made a sex video and sold it to their classmates... it was big news in korea that time...

Every once in a while someone posts this topic, and I always have the same response, that sexual attitude doesn't correlate to sexual activity. Some of the most liberal-minded people toward sex remain virgins until old ages. Some of the most obstinate virginity-pledge freaks become anal queens by the time they hit puberty.

definately agree with you on that my friend. You'll always find people who do one thing and say the other. (see abstinense only programs in the U.S.---yikes!!!!! score another for the bush administration).

As for the U.S. and young people having sex, I remember when I was in elementary school in the 6th grade- approx. 12 years old, a girl across the street from me and a guy down the street were having sex...protected amazingly.

Sure, I hadn't thought of that, but could prostitutes account for 20% of college aged guys who are having sex?

About sexual relations not meaning intercourse... guys, you have to remember the survey would've been done in Korean, not English. Does Korean have the same semantic quibblings regarding sex that English does? Also, how popular do you think oral sex is with Korean people? Nowhere near as popular as it is with Americans and other westerners, so when they ask about sex, they probably mean sex. It's hard to know for sure unless we were able to see the exact survey questions, though.

Hell, I know quite a few Koreans who didn't even get into their first relationship until early in their 20s.
