I have heard that they were going to give Chejudo the right to set up a trading zone, and the permission to make English their second language.
Many of the die hard Korean purists ar insisting that the move to make English the second language will detract from the Korean culture on the island.
I find such an argument full of holes partly brecause the use of English doesn't effect one's culture, but would instead enhance it by making it available to more people to interpret and study.
I have heard it said that the only way one's culture is dimished is if it is popularized and simplified to make it more useful and understood by the masses. if parts of one's culture become functonal then it's lost
Anyone know of any other ways that a culture is lost or enhanced |

If I'm reading this right, it doesn't make any sense. It makes a certain sense if you are talking about taking a Bach concerto and turning it into elevator music played by the local middle school marching band. Otherwise, I don't get what you are trying to say. Computers have become more more user friendly than they were 10 or 20 years ago. That hasn't damaged the culture. |

Again, I have to say....what culture? It will damage the priceless architecture? Somehow contaminate the long standing literary tradition of this counrty? Their visual arts will suffer? Will people stop eatig kimchi and seaweed? What culture?
Before you start hating on me... I like Korea. But mostly the only culture I'm aware of is an impossible language and some food that, mmm...well...you know. |

Korea has about as much culture as does US and Canada. Still US and Canada has other cultures that make them far more sophisticated then Korea. |

What does that have to do with anything he said? Your statement reminds me of the headlines I see in Korean papers where they compare Korea to America. Like... what? So? |

I can think of a couple.
But those on Jeju aren't the ones affected most. |

In school they study other countries relevant to their effect and or relationship to Korea, hence they learn nothing about the rest of the world. Might be a major traumatic shift for them to have to open their minds to the rest of the world.
They are probably saying no we mustn`t, we can`t. Never never never. |
