That's the name of a store in the 'won. My friend pointed it out to me yesterday. It's near Helios, and they have a bright pink sign. They sell accessories, I think. I'm assuming the owner thought, hey, I hear this word all the time in movies. Must be trendy, so I'll put it on a sign. If I opened a store called 18 or gaesekki or something, would that be ok? I wonder if there's some kind of neighborhood zoning commission- ah, nevermind.....

There were some workers doing repairs at the school I work at here in Thailand a few weeks ago, and one of them was wearing a t-shirt that said in big letters F*CK OFF W*NKER.

Zoning commission for what? Its a WORD. Its not a gun to kill people with. Arghh the western mentality of needing some big brother to protect us from all those bad, naughty words. Get some perspective. This is what I like about Korea, the total freedom.

Yeah, right. Try using Korean swear words around your place of work and see how long you last.

Yeah, Koreans are very sensitive about their own swears. For the most part they don't quite understand what our swears mean. I blame movie subtitles. If you say "I don't fvcking know!" it's translated to "I really don't know!" So "fvcking" means "really."

Once a coworker (who speaks English very well) asked me for more synonyms of the phrase "Why don't you go screw yourself?" I told her a few, and what they translate to in Korean, and it freaked her out. She didn't know what "screw" meant. The phrase she was looking for was "Mind your own business."

Well, Itaewon's a bit seedy. Stores with names like this don't exactly clean up the area or make it a more inviting place to visit. I hang out in Itaewon (purely for the food choices), but when I've had family visiting, I steered clear of Itaewon. They would've been like, "Why did you take me here?" I dunno- it's the "foreigner" area of Seoul. Confused

I used to live in Boston, and the Chinatown representatives (aldermen?) had to battle to keep Chinatown from turning into a cesspool, and it starts with little things like that (regulating signage). Hell, they even regulated the style of PHONE BOOTHS used in Chinatown (they all have this temple like design- they are wicked cool and add to the atmosphere).

Anyway, Itaewon is a big tourist area. Granted, not many people read signage (I didn't notice it till my friend pointed it out), but what does that say to the tourists? Erm, "Welcome to Korea"?

I think it would be nice if "our" (read: "foreigner") area was cleaned up a bit. The Koreans living over there would probably like to see an improvement, as well. Anyway, it starts with little things, like not using profanity in signage. Another Boston reference- I used to live in Beacon Hill, and the powers that be had a no neon rule. It kept the area quite quaint. The neighborhood was in an uproar when Starbucks wanted to put a store on the corner, even- they were worried about an increase in litter. Starbucks DID get their bid approved, but I thought it was nice to see that people cared so much about maintaining the quality of the neighborhood. As a result, Beacon Hill is a popular tourist attraction in Boston....

How is Itaewon our area? I avoid the place like the plague, been there about 3 times in my 5 years in Korea, dont really plan on going there anytime soon. Its a cesspool and I really dont care what the signs say. Id hate for Korea to become like back home when you need to apply to the zoning commission when you want to hang your laundry or sneeze.

There's a bar in Pusan called "C Bar". Isn't that a swear word in Korean? Well, since "c" is usally pronounced "shi". Not sure what it means, but I hear it in movies a lot.

Koreans throw around "puck you" like it means nothing. If you said that in America (with the F of course) you would knocked on your ass in about .5seconds. I think the translations in movies are a culprit. Sometimes they don't match at all!

Well, I put "our area" in quotes. I meant that it's a foreigner- frequented area, with a lg. foreign population. I KNEW someone was going to call me on that (frrrrrrmph...grrrrr....) Evil or Very Mad A bit similar to a Chinatown back home. Imagine putting up a store called "Gaesekki" in LA's Korea Town. I wonder how that would go over. Maybe if it's the name of a pet store, not too badly ^~

I can just imagine some of the kids from the base saying to their mom, "I saw a really cute pair of earrings in a store in Itaewon today!" "Oh, really? Where did you see them?" "Fvcking lovely~" "Young lady, do you want to see the back of my hand?!" Laughing

They often translate "shut up" as 입닥쳐! It's totally inaccurate but I have seen it translated this way in countless movies.
