seriously, 300,000 for a 30 gig ipod?
What is that thing...a harddrive, some mp3 playing software, and some headphones?
Should be half the price. So, why are they so expensive? |

All imported electronics have a huge import duty added. Same goes with cars. I think imported cars enjoy a 25%-50% duty. You'll also notice Korean electronics are no deal either. One can buy, say, an iRiver MP3 players cheaper in the USA than you can actually buy it in Korea. Since the price of Japanese (mostly) imports are so high, Korean competitors can soak local Koreans for extra cash. They don't have to pass on the full savings. They just have to be a little cheaper than the matching Japanese product.
I'm not even sure why the government has to work so hard to protect the domestic market when the Korean consumer will favor Korean made over imported regardless of price or quality. Once I witnessed my girlfriend buying a cooling pad for her laptop. She insisted on buying the more expensive, scratched Korean made cooling pad over the cheaper, pristine Chinese made unit.
I dunno. |

| ipods are expensive because of the cult of mac and the average person being a sucker for advertising and brand power. |

Not to mention that they have the market locked in most regions so that only the ipod appears as a viable option to most consumers.
In North America, for example, the only major competitor is Creative with they Zen Vision line of hdd players. Though, Creative doesn't have the cult, the advertising budget, or the consumer loyalty that Mac products do, so most don't even know about it's players.
When it comes to PMPs (Personal Media Players), the market is wide open, especially in North America. These are players that do more than an mp3 player (what the iPod does), but falls just a little short of the capabilities of PDAs and Blackberries. People are buying newer generation iPods (with video, photoviewing, etc), because there isn't much else out there that they can get at their local Best Buy. Mac is making a load of money from consumer ignorance to alternatives and their inability to buy the alternatives in retail outlets. PMPs from Archos (French), Mobinote (Japanese), Digital Cube (Korea), Cowon (Korea), and a lot of others are simply not widely available and unknown in North America (the main iPod market base).
There is actually nothing wrong with iPod players if you are just looking to playback audio files. Though, lots of people are looking for more than that these days and just don't know where to start in selecting another device since iPod marketing strategies have, very stylishly, whitewashed the market of any traces of competition. |

Acording to their website Iriver doesn't even offer a 60 gig model for the mp3 line, only up to 20, and for the same price as the 30 gig iPod. So it looks like for a big size player, iPod's are actually cheaper. What exactly does it have that the iPod doesn't? An FM Tuner. You sacrifice 10 gigs of space for an FM tuner and pay the same price. And it doesn't play movies as the iPod also does.
So where's the deal exactly? I'm not talking about PMP's here, only mp3 players. And this isn't a cult response, it's just straight numbers.

What exactly is this "cult of the mac"? Seems like one of those empty but convenient tags, like "apologist", people throw around when they can't think of actual arguments based on actual facts.
Last I heard, Apple's market share for MP3 players in the US was like 75%. You don't achieve that kind of dominance on a user-base that makes 5% of the PC market, nor on marketing alone.
If you're going to compare iPods to flash players, PMPs, toaster ovens etc, then yes, they're expensive. However if you look at similar offerings by Apple's competitors I think you'll find them priced either the same or maybe 20 bucks less. |

Dude, you could sell anything with good marketing. Some Mac users have cult like traits. I have a bachelor of computer science, 5 years of the entire computer world. Trust me, it is true. |

| I have only met 2 people who owned MACs/IPODs but did not belong to the cult, at least not overtly. THe rest are worse than the most aggressive bible thumping evangelist you've ever even imagined. |

There are LOTS of things wrong with an iPod. (And I am a rabid Mac devotee...)
Just for starters:
1. "rechargable" battery with an unpredictable and limited battery life. (I have heard the latest generations are getting better, but I'll just go with my AAA batteries, thank you very much!
2. Doesn't play WMP files.
These, apart from the ridiculous cost, are why I bought another brand for $50. |

Okay, say all mac-users belong to this cult -- though I haven't seen anything that suggests they frequent this board -- what does this cult have to do iPods? Again, mac-users comprise of less than 5% of all PC users. In light of this fact, how does mac-zealotry relate to iPod sales?
Thought so. Apparently, in your inherent distast for macs or mac users you've raised a completely meaningless point in favor of something relevant, for example, an example of a product that can compete with the iPod that sells for much less. That is what you would call "irony". When the tables are turned and the non-mac user becomes the minority, he begins to show the annoying traits of his counterparts.
I don't own an iPod, mind you, but I've used them before. Apple isn't perfect, but there are two areas where they completely own, and that's industrial design and user interfaces. As Mr. 5-Years-Computer-Science will concede, aethetics and interface trump any other considerations. This may not apply so much to computer hardware but the iPod obviously struck a chord (unintended) with the public. Apple came out with the right product at the right time, that's it. |
