Warning issued for encephalitis
The National Institute of Health yesterday issued a nationwide warning on Japanese encephalitis after discovering an encephalitis-bearing mosquito in Daegu for the first time this year. Encephalitis-carrying mosquitoes were found in Jeju, Busan and North Gyeongsang province in April 2005.

How much is the vaccine in Korea?
Even at the city run Health Dept. here in Dallas, they are charging $290.00 USD for the shot. |

Nope, but neither is Hep A, Hep B, or Typhoid........and I was only out around $100.00 USD for all three of those. |

Sounds about right. I went to see my old school friend who is a GP for some vaccinations in my final year of uni as I was heading to Indonesia for the summer break. JE was one of the ones on my list, but he told me in reality not to bother as it is usually confined to rural areas and the cost of the jab was quite high. |

Patients with encephalitis suffer from fever, headache, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness and photophobia. The patients could also suffer from weakness, seizure, and less commonly, stiffness of the neck. Rarely, the patients may have limb stiffness, slowness in movement and clumsiness, depending on the specific part of the brain involved. The symptoms of encephalitis are caused by the brain's defense mechanisms activating to get rid of the infection, including swelling, small bleedings and cell death.

Not only is the shot very expensive, but there are terrible side-effects as well. It's actually not recommended for most people unless they stand a darn good chance of exposure because the side effects are so serious. |

however, if you are infected the rates of death and permanent brain damage are pretty high.
I got shots for it a few years back in Aus.
by the way Im going to Sth E Asia for vacation and was looking into vaccinations for the trip, the missus got on the net and we went along to the YongsanGu Office where we got free typhiod innoculations. Alot of the others seem to be free too.
Look into for those needing shots. |

JE is carried by pigs and mosquitos bite the pigs and spread the disease. if you are visiting a rural area then it might be smart especially if there are any farmers raising pigs in the area. If you live in a major urban center like Seoul then really, your chances of getting it are very very slim. |
