I accidentally posted this in General Discussion and thought I'd have more luck here.
I'm really just wondering how much vacation time I can expect with a public school. I don't want to have to spend the entire break at school while the kids are off. I'd like to have some time to travel and visit home. Anyone know what I can expect? |

Depending on your school, your principal and your contract you will have at a minimum the same as a hakwon, 1 week in summer and 1 week in winter.
In real terms you will probably (if you have a good relationship with your admin staff) much more.
There are also ways to increase your official holiday time by banking your afternoon classes and getting extra time off in lieu (rate is 4 classes = 1 extra official day off).

Ellamarie,
What it comes down to is what is in your contract. Out here in Incheon Public Schools we get 14 days (plus Korean Holidays of course). I'm speculating, but the way the holidays fall in October of this year it will probably land me another week off (the first week of October we have Tues/Thur/Fri off).
I agree it is about the same as a run of the mill hogwan. Many hagwons though will either a) state when you have to take your vacation (as in the place will close down) or b) tell you there has to be coverage for your time off.
Again, I'm not sure about GEPIK and EPIK, but our schools go on summer vacation next week (starting the 24th) and are off a month.
The other thing to consider is whether you have to do camps on the vacation. I do have to do camps some of the time, but not all of the vacation. |
