A friend of mine and I were thinking of starting our own recruiting business on the side. We're both foriegners and he speaks near perfect Korean so he would be making contact with the hogwons and I would be trying to make contacts in the States. Either way we figure it's a pretty solid deal, if we can get it rolling. I'm just wondering, as the title indicates, how legal/illegal it is.
If we have the money wired directly to a U.S. account and dispursed from there, if a boss or someone else found out about it, would it conflict with our E2's?
Also if anyone's done it for cash instead of just hooking a friend up, anything to watch out for, tips or pointers? I seem to get the impression that finding teachers for hogwons is getting a bit tough right now we figured even if we were able to place one or two a month we'd be doing better than before.

Have one of your Korean friends to call the local district office and find out what you need to do to be legitimate recruiter.
It will make your head spin!
If your are just wanting to do it on the side, you will risk Immigration tracking you down and the tax office giving you heat.
Also, some schools are savvy to the teachers here doing some recruiting on the side so some may simply decide not to pay you your fee. In the end you have nothing to come back at them.
If one of your teachers has any contractual problems, you are so limited in the help you can offer.
But the worst thing that can happen, the thing that will make you really angry, will be when another recruiter will turn you in to all the above organisations because you are potentially taking away their business.
My advice to you would be (if you really want to do this) would be just have a very small amount of schools that you have a close relationship with. Maybe they are your old schools or schools that you know the boss.
Just recruit for them.
As far as I know if your company is an internet company there is a lot of grey area as to whether it is a Korean company or a foreign company. So you may get away with it.
I would imagine that some of the "foreign" recruiting companies list under the korean wife's name.
I started out like what you are wanting to do so I would be hypocritical to say don't do it, but it did get really dodgy for me.
If you want more info, PM me.
Talk to some other foreign recruiters.
I am not sure if they are legit so I won't name them, but I am sure they will read your post. They will probably PM you also.
But please, please, please...do not get into it if you think it will just be easy money. There is so much more to it than just handing over a resume and counting dollars |
