Maybe it's the weather or something, but I feel I'm just floating around amidst an ocean of Koreans. Don't get me wrong, I have alot of great Korean friends here and back home. Actually I just got here a couple of weeks ago, and I guess the homesickness is starting to hit..
Don't have any pearls of wisdom or advice.. just wanna know what to do about it.

Maybe you could join some meditation group. I want to check out this Vipassna meditation group. I heard of it before where this guy in India taught Buddhist Vipassna meditation and it supposedly transformed the prisoners. It is tough sometimes when you come to a new country and you hardly know anyone. That is why you feel homesick. I don't know tons of people yet. I've been here a few months. I know a few, but I know it takes time to get to know people. I've lived in several countries. Just hang in there... Where did you come from? |

I could give it a shot.. meditation.. I'm always up for something new.. is it in Seoul? I know the big thing in Korea is yoga. It's funny. I'm from Toronto and I had a lot of Korean friends there. I thought it be kinda similar. But guess it just takes time to adjust.. |

Adventurer ~~ do you know of a Vipassana group in Korea? i did the ten day course last summer in india. It was a great experience for me but i haven't been disciplined enough to keep it up since i've been back in Korea.
Stevenski ~~ i think this is good advice; meditation can really help you look at things from a more positive angle. I really felt i benefitted from doing a meditation course and i will definately get back into practising.
The guy in India Adventurer was talking about is Goenka. He was originally from Burma where they have continued the Vipassana tradition since the time of the Buddha; it is the method the buddha taught. Its quite simple; basically focusing on your breath and observing the feeling in all the different parts of your body.
Anyway if you want to check it out, the vipassana website is on:

I'd love to give it a try. If there were someplace in Seoul (and if I wouldn't feel out of place walking in the door by myself) it does sound like something I could do. |

Who you use as an avatar on a message board. Classy. She must be thrilled. |

Probably the easiest way to meet people is to join a class. There are a lot of different kinds of classes you could consider. Cooking. Painting/Pottery. Language. Aerobics.
Think about what you want, then ask someone at work to help you locate it. (or ask here). |

I agree with this. Way back when, when I first moved to Korea I went through a bout of homesickness and culture shock at about the 3-4month mark. For me, the way I snapped out of it was to get involved with the martial art hapkido. It gave me something to look forward to after work, and got me involved a bit with my community. At the time, it was probably the best thing I could've done. |

Take some martial arts classes. It's amazing to me how many martial arts gyms are in Korea.
I don't recommend Taekwondo, though. It's just not that fun. Try Hapkido (strong overall), Kumdo (sword fighting), or Yudo (Judo). The only snag you might run into is finding a class for adults. If you do have trouble with that, go with Yudo or Kumdo. Those two involve one on one competition and as a result most students are either very skilled and/or very strong and will offer up some good sparring. |

Versus guys who put their babies in their avatar or, worse, some Korean pin up they have zero chance of even getting a coffee date with? |

I am moving to Seoul in August and I am worried about being lonely as well, does anyone have suggestions on where to take some creative classes at? |

I just cannot imagine why you responded so sensitively to this, MM2. |
