I think my workplace would be an excellent cross-cultural TV reality show. There is drama galore and my co-workers would provide entertaining interviews. I was once the hardworking, quiet English teacher. Well, I am stiil hardworking, but due to unfortunate circumstances must get caught up in the drama too.
I would like to hear some more drama stories related to work, perhaps mine aren't the juiciest.
Here is one for ya. At my last job, there was a guy working there who always complained and pushed his work onto others. One day, he recieved his new schedule and wasn't happy with it. The next day, his Korean husband came in and got into it with the director. Oh boy, if you could have only seen that. |

In the years I hvae been coming to Korea and living here, I have seen very few openly gay men. There was one older guy I have seen hanging around Daegu train station, and on my first trip here in 2000, I had a shocking experience. I used to come here TDY for the 8th army, and on my first visit here, a friend who had been here before, gave me instructions to meet him in a bar on "the hill" in Itaewon. I was staying at the capitol hotel, and I went the back way to the hill, cutting through an apartment block. I got to what i thought was the correct street and headed up, armed with instructions. I thought there would be a lot more activity, but it was pretty bleak. I found the place, across from the outside diner (boiled stuff on sticks) and went in. So it's all guys. Mostly Korean, but a few foreigners. A couple of guys welcome me. Havent' twigged yet. Then someone asks my name. I give it. He gives his, offers to shake my hand. Ok, if thats what it takes to be culturally sensitive. Holds on a liiiitttle too long. Mighty friendly people here! Another guy offers to buy me drink. Ah, thanks, but I have to make a call. I call my friend. "Dude, I'm here now, where are you?" He, says, "Uh, I'm here, and you're not."
I'm on the wrong street. More than a dozen TDYs, more than fifty bases later, plus a year and a half living here, and I have yet to walk into another openly gay bar. |
