I have three teaching positions I am contemplating. My top criteria in choosing my next job are as follows: 1) fulfilling work in which I teach from an interesting, stimulating curriculum to adults 2) the highest salary I can find without being overworked and feeling exhausted 3) access to a good social life (organized social clubs for hiking, dancing, etc.) not centered around the bar scene. Keeping all this in mind, which sounds best to you?
1. A position in Seoul teaching adults (mostly university students), working 8 hours a day, Mon.--Fri., good curriculum, 3.2 mil but I must pay for housing (comes out to about 400,000 per month).
2. Another position in Seoul teaching adults (mostly businessmen) working 5 hours a day, Mon--Fri., good curriculum, very easy to teach, 2.2 mil (housing paid).
3. A position in Suwon, teaching adults (mostly businessmen), working up to 6 hours a day, Mon---Fri. (but current teacher says he ends up working mostly 4, sometimes 5-hour days due to cancellation of classes by the students), good curriculum, easy to teach, super-relaxed atmosphere, some outsourcing (driving to the company to teach is necessary twice a day).
All positions have standard benefits. I would appreciate your perspective on these positions. Thanks. |

even if you pump out 500k for rent you are money ahead.
Teaching businessmen usually comes with perks(golf, gifts, and lots of dinners)
I would imagine that you would end up kicking yourself if you took the lower paying jobs with longer hours! |

Thanks for your reply, but the other positions involve FEWER hours for less pay. If I factor in housing, working seven hours at position #2 seems to be somewhat comparable to working five hours at position #1. In other words, position #1 would net me about 2.7 or 2.8 for seven hours of work (I can choose how many hours I want), but after housing costs, I'd actually be making about 2.3 or 2.4. But position #2 gets me 2.2 with housing paid. I'm trying to find the rationale for working at position #1. Would it be worth it to work more hours for a just a little extra pay?
Is it better in some way to teach university students and people in their 20s (position #1) than it is to teach older businessmen (position #2)? |

They all have split-shifts, but I'm okay with that. |

Doesn't #1 pay 3.2 with no housing? If money is the most important part of your experience in country, I'd go for #1. If not, settle for 2.2. and free housing. |

| I would take #1; it pays well, you'd love the work, and it's Seoul, man -- you'd find rewarding ways to fill your time. Heck, if you pass on it, send me a PM and I'll apply! |
