Well, the replacement showed up in town late last week. (He hadn't contacted the current teacher [me], so what happened isn't much of a surprise.)

According to my co-teacher, Tuesday morning 'HE' came to the high school for a meeting with the Principal, Vice Principal and head English teacher and to sign the real contract. It didn't go well. Very Happy

First, they went over the contract together. It seems the recruiter had told 'HIM' that the salary would be W2.3 million. Of course, those of you following Yu Bum Suk's threads know that was not going to happen. 'HE' was peeved that they were only offering W2.2 million. Very Happy Very Happy

'HE' pulled out his gold cross and started repeating, "I'm a Christian. I don't lie to people. I'm a Christian. I don't lie. I'm a Christian. I don't lie." Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Then they got to the part of the contract about utilities. The head English teacher had told him that the school would pay utilities. Now the head English teacher told him, "Sorry. That was a mistake. You will have to pay your utilities. Please understand us." Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

'HE' started asking my co-teacher (26 and a newbie teacher, no teaching certificate--only has a job because her dad knows someone in the provincial ed office--and only in the meeting as a translator) about this discrepancy in money matters. She said she was just translating. She didn't know anything about it. 'HIS' response, "How old are you? How long have you been working here? Why don't you know about this stuff? ARE YOU A CHILD? ARE YOU A CHILD? ARE YOU A CHILD? I'm a Christian. I don't lie to people." Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

So the co-teacher starts trying to get information from the admin types...all the while 'HE' is saying, "Can I leave? Can I leave? Can I leave?" Finally the VeeP lost his temper and told 'HIM' in Korean to leave. He did. He went to the apartment, packed his bags and left. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

People could save themselves a lot of grief if they just talked to a teacher who has worked at the school in question before they fly over here.

Kinda sorry 'HE' bailed out so early. I think a nutcase and a couple of slime ball administrators would have made an interesting team.

On Monday, I was wandering the quiet sodden streets of my little country town and I came across the person in question. He seemed a really genuine person who was exceptionally positive and was willing to give the job his best shot. Now, the problem is a communication one and comes from a recruiter promising the world and a school with a standardised contract. Now, word has it, he has an interview at my school sometime next week. Hope it goes well for him, but I reckon the same problem will rear its ugly head again.

I don't quite follow here...if a recruiter had told me the salary was 1.3 million won, that would have been the end of conversation and contact with that school right there.

Nor do I get the reference to the other poster..but maybe that's some kind of inside joke for those who follow such threads.

Thanks for catching that typo, Urb. I went back and corrected it, and added a phrase that I think will clear things up.

Sorry.

No problems. I was honestly confused, but yes that does clear things up.

I think that this wild place called Changnyeong needs a visit from Rangi! Rangi loves wild places, it reminds me of when I was a boy hunting wild pigs near Pukateraki, often there would be long long days, but Rangi wouldn't mind.

I think they need to offer a bit more considering where Changnyeong is....

very rural which is nice but getting to the a country town in the middle of an unknown country and beng told that things are not what they seem would be not the best introduction....
