Since the last Windows security update there is a program running in my system tray and I keep getting a little pop-up that says "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting". It prompts me to buy a product key for Windows because "The Windows product key installed on this computer is not genuine." I've owned this computer for nearly 2 years and this is the first time I've seen this! It is really annoying... I can't start up the computer without getting a start page saying the same things, plus these pop-ups happen ever 5 minutes.
My version of Windows could be fake, who knows... But its been working normally for 2 years. Could this be some kind of adware/virus that is trying to get me to spend money? Or is Microsoft just being greedy??? |

Sounds like it's not a legit copy. Too bad you seem to have been caught unaware that your copy or Windows is fake and you did an update.
Ignorance isn't so blissful.
I have to wonder...how didn't you know your copy was fake? |

The laptop had a non-English version of Windows on it when I bought it and the shop gave me an English version to install on my own. I guess the English copy was fake. It is a bit annoying considering the version that came on the computer is real, but just doesn't offer English??? It has about 50 languages... but not English... go figure! Bloody Microsoft is just being greedy. So to hell with them. Next computer I buy will be a Mac! |

I'm not sure you understand that Windows has only one core language. The "50 languages" you are referring to are languages that Windows can display and perhaps imput, but the core of Windows is only in one language. Nobody can switch core languages with Windows.
It's not greed (they may be greedy though); there are many factors that influence the fact that there is only one core language. In most situations, users have the program in the language they want, so it's not an issue. Your situation is an exception -one that MS don't take into consideration - buying a computer in another country where the OS language isn't your own - but that doesn't change what is a pain in the neck for you.
Really, one should blame the vendors for giving you an illegal copy of your OS. You probably paid good money for the laptop and for them to toss you pirated software...well, that's the real outrage here. They could have easily gotten a legit version for you; even if they charged you a bit more for it. |

| if you google really hard there's a program that you can run which will fix the WGA notifications and allow future updates. The latest version came out in Early June and has worked for me, but I can't remember where I found it. Anyhow once vista is out, I'm going to be buying a legit copy. |

I'll be buying a new computer about 6 months after it comes out so I'll get Vista at that time - of course if there is loads of bad press I may reconsider and just get a legit copy of XP. |
