Ok so I was told I wouldn't have to pay for taxes my first two years b/c I'm an American citizen...now about 5 mins ago I was told that since I have an F4, I'm Korean (???) and will have to pay taxes.

Anybody with an F4 know what's what about paying taxes your first two years working in Korea? Do we have to do it or are we exempt like all the other Americans??

SHouldn't one ALways pay taxes?

You either pay taxes to your home country, or the country you are residing in.

Since you have an F4, you are eligible to pay for taxes in Korea, and you are exempt of paying taxes to your home country.

I am pretty sure there are rules in place that prevent double taxation, but taxation nonetheless is inevitable.

I'm talking about the two year tax exemption in Korea for American citizens. I'm supposed to be able exempt from paying taxes to the korean govt for 2 years.

Yea, I think you still have to pay taxes. I was on an E2 my first year and paid taxes, then switched over to the F4 (if I only knew!) and yes, I still pay taxes. At least it's to Korea and not the US....

In my case, I'm on an F-4 and did not have to pay Korean taxes for my first 2 years. This was under the 2 year exemption for US citizens. I did not have to pay US taxes since I maintained a foreign residence and made under $80,000/year. You still have to file your US forms, though, and after 2 years, you will have to pay Korean taxes.
