This is a parody of all those "Why do Koreans do things like they do?" People think Korea seems to be the only country to do stupid things (or what we think of as stupid, but maybe just different). Non-North Americans can add too about their country, I just didn't want to group countries I don't know well enough into this. Also, for me atleast, some of the things I might say are valid only in Canada or maybe even certain provinces. Now, I am not saying things Koreans do are not stupid, but many people here think it is only them.

1) "What the hell is exact change? Why can't they just give out change like back home? It doesn't take any more time and the change machines aren't that expensive."

2) "Why the hell do I have to pay this waitresses wages? Are they slaves from Eastern Europe? Why don't the restaurants pay them?"

3) "Why the hell did I just pay 2 dollars for this watered down coke?"

4) "What are you talking about officer? I saw everybody turning right on red lights in the last town. I'm in Quebec now? You mean the traffic laws change between provinces?"

5) "Why are these neanderthals still using the Imperial system? I don't know what my foot size is in inches?"

6) "Who the hell would ever want to drink a 2L slurpee?"

7) "Why can't I bring food into the theatre? Have you seen the prices you guys are charging for that stuff?"

8) "You mean there are only 5 or 6 stores total in this crappy little town that are allowed to sell alcohol? And they tend to close at 9 and are not open on Sundays? What the hell kind of third world country is this?"

"I need some rubber bands, some paper clips, some pencils.
I looked all over down town and I can't find a stationery store. . .
What? At a pharmacy? Are you kidding? According to my dictionary, 'pharmacy' means ౹! You mean I have to go in a ౹ and ask for paper clips?"

What do you mean I have to wait a year for my application to be processed? Does everyone in the federal government just pick their noses all day?

There's a lot of things in North America that I'd be happy to acknowledge as stupid, but I'll be damned if I am going to defame the greatness that is a 2L Slurpee.

Oh please, let's start a thread to remind ourselves that yeah, we're not perfect but it's only in the minor things actually .... unlike the BIG things that Koreans are known for like racism, cheating, victim mentality and so on and so forth, that we know for a fact .... and also just to reassure ourselves we're not racist because you know we have things like people not counting correct change in our own countries and so on ....

I'll add another minor thing to the list:

In Korea, kids say "Hi" to strangers,

Kids in Australia say, "ni ha mao, slopehead".

Just rename this thread: "Superior North Americans". Rolling Eyes

I do find this dumb too. If a waitresses wages depend on service, then she becomes a slave to the customers whims. This is lousy. In England you have to respect the waitress or barmaid otherwise she will just ignore you. The American idea that a waiter is some sort of low lifeform at their beck and call is totally objectionable.

re culture differences: theres no such thing as common sense, in reality. All there is, is a completely different set of cultural rules and guidelines, paths of thinking, instilled in each person from the earliest age. The inability to think outside of these are common to just about every nationality.

I meant tips. Waitresses DO get paid in North America. Tipping is stupid, everyone should just be paid what they should be making. One of the major things I don't like about our culture.

Ha ha, somehow I always hear something awfully racist mainly from Australia. I'm living in a small town in Ontario, Canada. Some kids in my town were like that except that slopehead part. "NI HAOOO~!!" Of course, I just thought they were cute. Guess I'm too insensitive. Next time, I will pay more attention to check if they are being any nasty or racist. In fact, there was only one time I was seriously called by a hardcore racist name here in Canada by an white adult. "F-cking oriental c-cks-cker!" for nothing wrong I did actually. Smile Oh, and somehow every single Jamaican worker(from Jamaica) here call me "Mr. Chin." Literally every single each one. However, because I know they are basically friendly and don't mean anything bad, I don't care much.

I disagree. It's a performance-based incentive that, in most cases, can motivate a service industry worker to provide the best possible service. It's one thing I don't like about the western-style restaurants here. You deal with 5 or 6 different people, there's no such thing as expediting, etc.

I worked bartending and waiting gigs part-time back home on top of FTE, and I had a load of repeat customers/clientele who would request to be seated at my table...that's a good feeling.

On the other hand, when an Asian family or group would come in, I could give two $hits about their table because I knew no matter how hard I worked, I'd be lucky to get a 5% tip. Wink

My only complaint so far is "Why the hell are you leaving a baby carrage with a (your) baby in it on the sidewalk outside of the Applebee Bakery in Ilsan, with the wheels faced perpendicular to the street while you peruse baked goods and scarf all the free samples?" The laws of physics apply at least at least anywhere on this earth.
