Make a map, using English directions ie. 10 steps right, two step left from the green tree. If you can go outside, break them into groups and have each group locate a treasure. Costumes are always fun, it is easy to make a hat from paper. Do a search on the net, if you haven't already.

Wasn't there a Muppets Treasure Island/pirate movie, or something along those lines? That might work.

"Hook." Peter Pan, cartoon or movie it will definately work there. Have theme create little swords from cardboard and have it out.

I'm sure the parents will love to have their kids learn this song.

http://www.toucans.net/Pirate/yoho.html

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.

We extort, we pilfer, we filch and sack.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
Maraud and embezzle and even hijack.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.
Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.

We kindle and char, inflame and ignite.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
We burn up the city, we're really a fright.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.

We're rascals, scoundrels, villans and knaves.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs!
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.

We're beggars and blighters and ne'er-do-well cads.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
Aye! But we're loved by our mommies and dads!
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.
Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.
Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.
Yo Ho, Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me.

A high grade 3 or a low grade 3?

Can they manage this simplified version of Treasure Island (which includes the Ho Ho Ho, a bottle of rum song):

How about What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor song?

I recommend a scavenger hunt to fill time. You give a list of items you want the kids to collect from around the school. The first group to return all the correct items to you gets a prize. The kids get SOOOOO excited beyond belief at the chance to run around all over the school grounds, and all you have to do is sit and wait in the classroom for them to return!

If you have a low grade 3, I recommend getting hold of the Oxford Tree Readers green level edition which features a simple pirate story as part of the magic key theme of that level.
