Hey gang,
Long-time-lurker, first-time-poster.
Joining a forum is a first for me so excuse my "rookieness". (This is the THIRD time writing this and can't seem to get this posted! What the heck is "Preview" at the bottom of this Subject screen anyways?)

Anywho, I read an open letter to Korean drivers and it got me thinking about the unwritten Korean driving etiquette here. I lived here 12 years ago and the way Koreans drive now is...amazing compared to a decade ago (They were JUST starting to have people actually take driving lessons in order to get their license rather than only paying a certain amount of money I think).

I've been driving on these roads by car and motorcycle for a year and now Koreans have developed their own unspoken ettiquette kinda like our flashing of the headlights at on-coming traffic to warn them of police down the road or your brights are on.

A few that I've noticed is the turning off of headlights at intersections outta consideration for opposing traffic. Don't know if I'd do this because I'd probably forget to turn them back on! And another is after passing you on a single lane road, they'll wave as if to say, "Sorry, but I'm in a hurry."

What others have you noticed? Please keep in mind this is NOT intended to be a bash Korean drivers thread, so try to play along (Rodney King suddenly came to mind, "Can't we all just-" ahh, shaddup!)

Only one that I can think of off-hand is that turning your lights off essentially means you're giving way. At night, when two people are at a bit of a face-off over who should go, if one driver doesn't really care, they'll turn their lights off to signal this.

Horns are also used here more to warn people of your intentions than to say "Hey screw you! Get off the road!" or as an audial representation of the classic middle finger.

"Preview" just means that you can see how the post looks before actually posting it. Useful if you're using images or quotes or something that visually affects the thread.

That's a good one, yeah. One thing I particularly like is if someone is trying to turn right, but there's someone stopped at the corner who's planning to go straight. They just tap on the horn and the car will move out of the way so they can turn before the light turns green.

Similar to this one is flashing your hazards after you've cut somebody off, as a way to apologize.

In my town, there are lots of narrow roads, so drivers often give the courtesy honk to someone who has pulled off to the side to lets them pass.

Another one is when traffic is quickly slowing down, especially on the highways, to turn on your hazards to warn the people behind to slow down. I like this one 'cuz it really is more noticeable than just brake lights.

That's all I can think of for now...

Yea, I've noticed slow drivers pulling over to let others pass followed by the hazzard lights or honk of appreciation. That's a cool one.

I plan on buying a car this school year so I think these are good things to know and even practice myself.

As for that Preview button, I tried it and completely lost my post.

Oh, right, the hazard lights. Those are also used to signal the fact that you're doing something crackheaded and need your space. I love flipping these on when trying to park, because that most definitely is an experience for all around me, I'm sure.

Sometimes I can't remember the difference between driving quirks here and back home. I'm probably going to be doing the Korean things when I go back and have some trucker beat the crap out of me. Shocked
