Last time I was I was here it was a bit of an issue and as I've just got here, I don't want to experience it again.

What are your secrets of success?

Like any place, Korea is what you make of it. If you sit around in your apartment feeling sorry for yourself and posting on Dave's, then you are going to be lonely. If you go out (and that doesn't mean hanging around in bars if that isn't your thing), then you'll start meeting people and having the time of your life.

Yes, it's what you make it.

Today for example is a sweltering hot day day here in Geochang... the coolest place is the PC Bang at the moment - nicely air conditioned. Being at home with no air con and only the TV for company would have been boring.

At least here, me and my blond hair is a bit of a novelty with the kids who are hanging around me as I type. They are fun and like to practice their few words... I encourange them too..

I was lonely during my marraige, well near the end anyway, I have been lonely in places all over the world since.

It happens when you are surrounded by people and when you are physically alone.

I like my own company, made friends with myself but do like compay as well. Its the filling of your time as well as the finding of people you can have a real conversation with.

Actually I think its like most things, we appreciate good mates better when we have experienced loneliness as well. And like most things..it passes.
Now I must go do something before I get too philosophical...oh heck! Rolling Eyes

It's not there but it would get at least two votes.

secrets of success? i'm hardly the most successful, but what i would say is treat korean friendships with a pinch of salt, they're usually very temporary.
instead, make sure you have 2 or 3 close waygook friends to share with.

In my opinion, you have to come mentally prepared to spend a lot of time with only yourself. (If things work out differently, all the better.) Figure out what you enjoy doing by yourself and do it. Reading, art, the gym, cooking, writing, taking classes...

Is talking to the fruit flies and giving them names a sign of loneliness?

A common and largely "un-talked about" feeling, bound to hound those bound to unfamiliar lands. Even anonymously, many would be embarrassed to admit loneliness creeps through substantial parts of their days and lives. Distractions abound, so one can be lost and not dwell on the wellspring beneath. But it is there. It does not disappear. It seeps through the cracks and attacks the core of one's little shore. Indeed it has been known before the times of Rome, back when the angels said, perhaps tonight, solace will be sure to descend upon your head. But back into the race you will find the others, though alike, possess another mind.
