Hello people:

Where are the good places in Seoul to find old school PC hardware. My objective is to build a PC with top of the line hardware but as cheaply as possible. Are there vendors around that speak some English that carry used (cheap!) PC hardware in Seoul.
Specifically, I'm also looking for a Voodoo 5 video card with 64MB vram and the best Creative Labs sound cards for under $50.

I can't get too specific, but if you go to Yongsan in the building with the big AMD balloon on top, there is a whole area with bins of really old used parts. It's near the back of the second or third floor. BX boards, Voodoo cards, RivaTNT...the works.

I'm sure someone will give better directions than that, but it's there.

demophobe, do you mean the old Yongsan market building (across the catwalk) from the station exit 3?
By the way, are there weird hours over there or something? I went on Saturday and the place was shutters and boards, and my boss told me that it's also closed on Sundays. Geez, when's a guy supposed to find the time to go!?

That's the place, mate. Yeah...strange hours. Mondays aren't good either, if I recall correctly.

Anyhow, it's a graveyard of computer parts for next to nothing.

Not always. I was going to buy an old 20Gig hard drive to use as a portable just to swap files with friends. They wanted 20,000 for it. It's worth about 5 bucks.

If it's the building that's next to the long tunnel then it's called the 선인 building.

Ahhhh, of course.

Still, way too high of a starting price. What's my counter offer, 1000 won?

don't give a starting price.

The best way to barter with Koreans is to stare at it, and start talking in English, complaining.

Show them you want to buy it, but not at that price.

In Korea they prefer to sell without profit, then not to sell.

I once went for a pocket translator English/Korean.

They first offer 140.000, it took me 15 minutes to get it to 90.000.

I've done some serious haggling in Yongsan. I know the game. But we're talking about them offering a price 3-4x it's value. 140,000 won down to 90,000 won is, what, a 1/3 reducation in price, approximately.

Yeah, bartering for electronics stuff could get awkward but I think haggling is a cakewalk. I always did it back home and I've done it here.

I spotted a large survival knife in Itaewon that I thought was novel, but the vendor wanted too much for it at 25,000 won and I let her know this. She then asked me what I wanted to pay for it. I said 10,000 won. She said no way. I then gestured that I would go and that I might be back later. She reneges, and I get the knife for 15,000 won. A 66% discount for four mintues of "effort" is stellar savings for anybody Razz

There are 2 other spots in Yongsan; the building with all the weekend stalls, facing south-east(?) has quite a few A/S type shops at the rear - to the right which have a good assortment of used PC parts (main floor), and if you exit that building at the far rear - on the left side, there is a squat building with a wide alley way - shops on the left side of it have used parts.
No odd hours, as I know - open on weekends, too
