In Seoul or Pusan. Pepper spray, small extendable batons, medium chains, martial arts supplies, perhaps the next step up maybe a stun gun, and the like? With anti-westernism and numerous gang attacks being read about on these and other forums, this is a necessity. Anyone who knows anything of the like please either make list here or pvtmsg to me. Thanx. |

For the weapons junkies out there, check out the local bookstore's magazine section. You'll find a few Korean paramilitary magazines and within the covers are advertisements for that kind of gear.
However, if its Korean-made, its a piece of shit, and not something you would want to have to depend on when danger comes.
It's better to order from abroad and get the quality equipment.
The best homemade weaponry is a small flask of gasoline and a lighter. Its utterly democratic, since the attacker soaked with gas has a vote if he wants to continue the assualt as you are ready to flick the spark and send him into a blazing hell. |

Grabbing some non-edged pieces (like nunchucks or batons) shouldn't be a real problem if you get them from overseas and ship them in.
Might be a good idea to clear with customs beforehand tho :)
I agree with Buck in regards to some of the Korean gear. It's not really spectacular, and you probably won't be able to find the quality you find in overseas stuff.
Also might be worthwhile to see if you can just pop them over from Japan or Taiwan since the freight will be cheaper than bringing gear in from the US/Canada.
The only problem with gasoline or petrol is that you need to get pretty close to someone to get any decent amount splashed onto them. Then again, the "suicidal waygookin" approach has a neat psychological edge.

Have you been to Korea before, or are you just going by what you've read on this forum?
If you're so worried about your personal safety, what the hell are you doing even considering going to Korea?
Keep your eye on this thread, hopefully it will ease your fears but perhaps it might make you consider staying at home where you have access to more firepower.

Attacks are very rare. Don't worry.

Haha good one Dr Buck, well difficult to carry around a canteen of gasoline but great humor nonetheless and wouldn't mind seeing a group of four wimps face it in their state of toughness.
Jaebea very good point: "the "suicidal waygookin" approach has a neat psychological edge." No doubt. |

CoffeeCup,
You need to calm down and take a deep breath mate...
You have yet to arrive here and have allready decided the place is worse then Beyrouth in the 80's....
Why would you buy a weapon?
this "anti-westernism" you mention is far from being "out of control"...
You must be able to make the difference between what the media show you (usually quite overblowns) and the reality of things.
Have to side with Bulsajo here...you seem to be entirely too worried about entirely too many things to come here...perhaps you should pick a different destination like say...your mothers house....you'll be safe and free from discrimination there.
all jokes aside, witht he mindset you seem to have I fail to see why you would even want to come here... |

Not in the market for some, but I am curious... are the police the only ones in Korea who can have Pepper spray? I've never seen it elsewhere. |

Um, I've been here eight and a half years and so far I got grabed by an old bloke once and had a man in his twenties try to kick my brifcase out of my hand. A Samsonite briefcase loaded up with laminated flashcards, queit funny it was.
If you are weak in appearence or female then you might have a little more trouble but it's a lot safer than back home in general. |

Coffeecup, if you carry weapons around with you on a night out, not only will everyone think you're an utter weirdo, you won't get laid, and you will increase tenfold the chances of actually having trouble. This place is very very safe. You seem determined to find trouble. Personally I hope you do. |

Well said.
This is not Baghdad. If you would like all this equipment because it's your hobby, okay, but don't feel you need to be armed to the teeth to walk to Topmart and buy a carton of eggs.
There are days I'm not crazy about Korea, but I don't want to frighten a prospective teacher away because of threads like this.

Did you kick the crud out of him and chase after him yelling "You Forgot the briefcase. YOU FORGOT THE BRIEFCASE!!!" like Michael Douglas did in _Falling Down_?
princess, that would have been cool |
