I was just reading in my Lonely Planet and they suggest bringing virtually nothing with you to Vietnam because you can buy everthing there for so cheap.
So now I'm thinking about arriving with pretty much nothing. Has anyone ever done this? Is it really a feasible and not stupid idea? |

As a general rule, I prefer to bring as little as possible to most places I go. I always buy some clothes everywhere.
Vietnam doesn't have department stores (at least not a few years ago).. no shopping malls and such. T-shirts and such you'll find everywhere though. |

If youre a larger size at all, finding clothes that fit (except for t-shirts) will problematic. Buddy of mine's bag was lost and he had to buy new everything. He was 167cm, 64kg (real small), but still had to buy xl, and in one case xxl shoes, trousers, jackets etc.
That being said if you dont mine wearing suits and dress shirts while you are there, the tailors are excellent and cheap. Have a suit made everyday youre there .
Also most of the manufactured goods are the worst quality mass produced Chines crap you could imagine. You can buy things like torches (flashlights) and watches for dirt cheap, but they will break six hours later if they work at all.
Tolietries, medicines, and other sundry goods are all ok to buy. |

Two years ago there were at least 2 department stores near each other, around Dong Khoi, District 1, HCMC. A lot of things in these department stores, especially clothes I think, were really expensive for Vietnam. Must have been for tourists who couldn't be bothered to figure out a nearby market selling the same stuff for a fraction of the cost. There was one quite big market near there that sold a lot of good stuff, a lot of clothes included, for not bad prices. Actually most of it was negotiable, unlike department store rip off set prices.
There was also an international clinic next to the Canadian Embassy that was a rip off. If ya need to see a doctor avoid that one. |

There are a few shops in the basement of Hanoi Tower (can't miss it) that have really cheap stuff. Just next door to it is the "Hanoi Hilton" POW camp.
If you have a favorite pair of pants or a shirt that fits just right, the tailors in Hoi An (just south of Da Nang) will make copies of them for you for a couple bucks. |

Depends, if your just going to travel around, then why not.....but the clothes you buy from the market will fade and fall apart after not too long. The quality is not so good. Most of the stuff in the high street shops is ok quality and very reasonable.......talking a pair of jeans from $15, T-shirts from $5....
Good thing about Nam is the fact that you don't need many clothes anyway because you KNOW it's gonna be hot. |
