|
|
I know there are a couple other users here from the area. I'm in Windsor currently for holiday. Anyway, miracle of miracles, not only has someone opened a Korean grocery store (at the corner of Wyandotte and Pelissier) but there's a Korean BBQ join down near the university on Wyandotte.
What's sad is the prices on imported Korean foods are about the same you'd pay in Lottemart. One day Koreans are going to wake up to the fact grocery chains and electronics are in collusion and jack up their prices... and Koreans are going to do exactly nothing. They'll keep paying more for Samsung, when Samsung is selling it 20% cheaper in North America, because it is Korean and it is necessarily the best. |

They sell soju in Toronto restaurants for $20! |

Windsor is a great place for a drink!
And, while I totally agree that Koreans tend to pay a premium for things as they are into the status thing -- usually when you buy Samsung in Korea, it is made in Korea but when you buy Samsung in North America, it is made in China, and hence cheaper. |

I've been to that grocery store a couple times now when I've been home.. surprised the hell out of me because I never thought of Windsor as having much of a Korean community at all.. The owner's kid is fluent in English but the mother isn't quite there yet.. if anything, Windsor's Korean community is probably being built bu Windsor ex-pats bringing their wives back home!
As for the Bingo Halls.. they were an easy way to get money out of Americans for the most part (I used to work TONS of Bingos raising cash for my soccer teams and such back in the day).. Thankfully that smoking ban seems to be killing them off and hopefully they'll be done with soon for good... |

I heard there's even one in Moncton, NB. So, that doesn't surprise me. |

I used to ride my bicycle back and forth quite a bit along Wyandotte, but this was before I had any awareness of Korea. I am sure that I saw it and assumed, like most other people, that it was Chinese. I would have enjoyed the BBQ. |
