NONE of the other native teachers at my school will discuss where they went to college. I've worked with them for months, and whenever I talk about college, each of them gets nervous and clams up. I've often asked them where they went to college, and the it's always the same reply,-"I went to college in Canada." All three of them ALWAYS say exactly the same thing, alone or in a group.
Even in Canada, colleges have names.
They NEVER talk about: college classes, bars/parties,instructors/profs, college friends, or anything else related to college.
The college graduates I know are always talking about these things.
At first, I thought they were all just being rude. Now, does anyone have any idea why they would act this way? |

Maybe they are just embarrassed that they went to Podunk U in Outer Manitoba...or it could mean they went to Bangkok U. Plot to see their ARC card.
Or maybe it's all innocent and they just aren't interested in talking about their college life. |

That's really strangee--usually the "where did you go to Uni" thing is really, really tame...and can lead to some great discussions like "you knew Jim Smith, so did I!!" or "you lived there and went to "X" bar on weekends, so did I!!!"sort of thing.
I'd put my money on the idea they have no college degree at all because that's just too weird. |

Or maybe its none of your d@mn business. Why do they owe you an answer for anything? If they don't want to talk about it then why do you persist in asking a hundred times? I hate it when someone I don't really like is asking me personal things for no reason. In what way does it matter to you where they went to school unless you have a better school and want to show them up.
Maybe they don't like you......that is an option. |

You know, Immigration offers a reward for turning in illegals who are teaching on a tourist visa. If they are working illegally, you could earn a cool 1-2 million won each. |

I would be suspiscious. Every Canadian I ever met in Korea was more than willing to talk about their wonderful country and how cheap their colleges and universities are. |

We can always count on Bellum99 to jump to an emotionally-charged conclusion and act the part of Mean-ol'-Fork.

Truely. It's such a common, basic question! Why wouldn't they want to answer it? |

Well there's your problem... they aren't Canadian! No Canadian would say I went to college, unless they did, and then they'd be working in the trades at home making 8 times the money they could make here, or working a not so nice paying secretarial job. |

Sounds like they're winding you up for a joke. A clicky, group conspiracy.
Are youpopular with them? |

That reminds me of the guy I work with, who claims to have master's in classics but whose resume lists zero work experience, and refuses to talk to literally anybody. How do these people get hired? |

Good question, Hater Depot.
By the way, how old is the person in question? If the guy is a recent uni grad, then I'd not bat an old billygoat for the possibility that his mum and dad, like most other parental units in North America, paid the very expensive costs of his Bachelor of Arts Degree.

There's so many universities in Canada and it's such a huge country that there's actually very little point to telling anyone what university you went to unless you are actually from the same city because chances are that they've never heard of it.
Even the ones that other Canadians are likely to know about (since you sound as though you are not Canadian), you are very unlikely to have heard of.
Personally I think it's a tad rude to ask some one what university they went to. I've been working in Korea for 3 years now and have never asked anyone what university they graduated from. The closest that I get to asking them about their university life is what their major was.
I also never talk about classes, bars/parties, instructors/profs, college friends, or anything else related to college either. Actually, I don't know anyone that does for that matter.
I'd say that they are not suspicious, they just don't care to discuss the matter. Ask them what they think the Oilers' chances of repeating their playoff performance again this year is and they probably will not 'clam up'. |

Fair enough.

Our backgrounds are an interesting point-of-inquiry.
