I find some coconut milk at E-Mart the other day and am wondering where I can find curry powder so I can cook up some tasty goodness? I know Koreans eat curry, so there must be curry powder somewhere but I couldn't find it at Lotte or E-Mart? Am I just really confused?

If you live in Seoul, go to Itaewon. There are lots of Pakistani supermarkets on the small streets behind the Starbucks and Burger King.

If you don't live in Seoul, find out where the Pakistani grocery stores are in your area.

If you like curry, I'd also recommend that you try Japanese curry sauce. They're sold in long boxes (for about 4000 won) and come in different spice levels. You can find it at most major Korean supermarkets like Home Plus and Emart in the small imported foods section. So easy to make too. Just cut and fry some onions in a frypan. Cut up vegetables of your choice (I usually use potatoes). In a big pot, bring 700 ml of water to a boil. Put half a box of curry cubes into the water and bring down the heat to where it's just boiling a bit. Stir frequently for 10 minutes. Add the veges and cook for about another 10 minutes. Then serve with rice. Yumm!

It makes about 4 servings, so I usually put the leftover sauce in the fridge and microwave it for other meals in the week.

I bought 5 different currys at a small mart in Itaewon. 3 Thai curries and two Indian ones. Only thing worth going to Itaewon for. Oh, and their Coconut Milk is cheaper too. I think several of the smaller marts in the back alleys will have this.

Hannam Market has some small buckets of really nice curry paste that comes in fiery yellow, fiery green, or explosive diarrhea red. They're spicy and have a nice complexity that you'll find sorely lacking in Korean curries. They also have frozen lemon grass, frozen kaffir lime leaves, and frozen thai basil...if my shriveled memory serves me correctly.

Try the middle-eastern marts first, they're cheaper...even if you have to buy all the components and mix them together.

It's been a while since I was in Seoul but there used to be at least two places selling halal meat (mostly lamb I think). One was along the same alley as Usmania, Santorini's etc and the other was near the mosque - down towards where Abbey's Bookstore used to be. I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find halal meat if you asked at one of the restaurants or spice stores.

Lamb sounds like a good option to the obnoxiously overpriced pork phenomena...is the Halal lamb cheaper than the stuff at Hannam Market?

Last month I bought a big can of curry spice at the new East Indian store right next to WhatTheBook in Itaewon.

I bought coconut milk in Itaewon and then found it for less at Emart AND Kim's Club later that week.
