by name only? (Jesus probably)
or by face? (Hasselhoff was a good guess)
in combination: Einstein or Gandhi or Beckham or... given one-in-every-four people on the earth are Chinese: Michael Jackson! |

no different than an American expecting people in China or India to know of Elvis or Ali
(conflating one's country with the world, talking as if it's about the world, but actually is about one's own country, but not drawing that distinction, unaware that there's any real difference - happens often) |

All time, I think it has to be Jesus.
I've read a few articles that said that Muhammud Ali was the most famous person on the planet over the last half century.
I think there's a big historical knowledge gap between the eastern world and the western world.
Other historical figures: Napolean, Churchill, Joan of Arc, Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great, and William Shakespeare. Actually, Shakespeare would probably be right near the top as he's been translated into every language on the planet. |

Ali is actually a pretty global figure. When I lived in Malaysia, half a million people went to the airport to watch him get off a plane. Watch "When We were Kings" if you want to see what he meant to Africa and the Congo. |

In Turkey, you'd hear a lot of votes for Ataturk. Time magazine tried to have an online vote for person of the century in late 1999 but had to give it up because of Turks flooding the system with votes for ol' Mustafa Kemal.
Interesting that no one has mentioned Mohammed. He's gotta be up there, even if there are more Christians than Muslims in the world.
EDIT: Of course, Capt'n Planet mentions Mohammed while I'm typing. |

No that is a little different because America extends it`s influence and thus it`s recognition far more penetratingly out into the world than does Korea. And both Ali and Elvis are far far far more well known outside America than Sejeong is outside Korea... |
