I am going to be in Phuket for the first two weeks of February. I've been looking on-line and things seem a little out of my price range. I can't find anything for less than 12,000 baht a night. I know that's not expensive but I'm working with $1,000 USD for six weeks so...any suggestions. I would be willing to consider other locations.

12,000 a night or 12,000 per week? Wow, that is high.

Get off the beach. 1 or 2 blocks back and the price drops by bucket loads. You can usually find places for ~4000 per week.

Yes, too many zeros there. I meant 1,200/night. I will get off the beach that's ok. Do you think I should show up and look for something cheap in town or is it possible during that time that everything cheap could be gone?

$1000 for 6 weeks? In high season? Good luck! High season is a rip off but only in Patong. Go to another beach, Kata or Karon for example, and you will find a good deal. Maybe 600 a night if your lucky, and much better accom than in Patong anyway.

What baldrick said. You can also check out the Phuket Gazettes classifieds accommodation available section for a condo or other longer term rental.

Well, not quite. There's going to be two of us in SE Asia for six weeks and we have a budget of $2,000. So there will be other cheaper places such as Cambodia that will hopefully balance out the costs. Maybe that is unrealistic. If so then we leave earlier. But I'm definately flexible about locale and I will look on that site mentioned above thanks.

It is not unrealistic. I think people who spend a lot of time in Thailand are just put off by Phuket in the high season. It is difficult for me to go there and spend 600 baht ($15usd) for a hotel room on September 30th and then be told I have to pay 2800 baht ($70usd) baht for the same room on October 1st. It is just a poor value to visit in the high season if you have a choice to visit in the low.

If you work schedule dictates you can only visit in the high season you will still find it is less expensive than 1st world vacation spots. The last time I was in the USA with tax staying as a Super 8 motel was around $70usd per night (if you are not familiar with the US, Super 8 is a chain of basic budget motels. The McDonalds of motels) .

You can actually get by on $1000 per person for 6 weeks in Phuket if you book a monthly rental OR stay in the most basic accommodations and skimp on things. If you are balancing it with other lower cost destinations, you will be fine.

Enjoy.

Yeah our contracts finish up the second week of January so that's my time. But I won't be spending my whole six weeks in Phuket so I don't know if the condo rental will work for me. Something cheap in town sounds like the best deal for us.
