Got a layover in Singapore and land at 3 in the arvo and leave at 12 midnight..
Been there once but all the ex-missus wanted to do was shopping and sleep after a bit of a hard slog through India...
So any suggestions on things to see and do for 9 hours in the evening?? |

| Make use of that kick a$$ airport! I swear it is one of the best to be layed over in the world! Check out what it has to offer. From what I remember there was a pool and a gym though! |

I have layed-over at Singapore 3 times in the past..
While it is good it is much better to get out and have an explore of the city.... |

I've had 2 8-hour layovers in Singapore, and there is a LOT to do!! Some, of course, depends on the time of day that you'll be there, but if you check out their website ( http://www.changiairport.com/changi/en/airport_guide/transit/suggested_activities.html?__locale=en ) there is a list of "suggested activities" depending on how long you stay. There is a free movie theater (hard to find...ask someone!!) , plenty of free PCs with free internet service (LOTS on the 2nd floor!!), gym, hotel rooms(6 hours for about $35), free lounge chairs with built-in alarms for napping, free foot massagers, one "smoking" bar with live music after ... um... maybe 6 pm?
If you're there at the right time, there is also a free 2 hour tour of Singapore. Go to any information counter to find what you need. They're super helpful and all speak English!! |

| Go to Arab street first from the airport. Not sure what the metro stop is but easy to ask someone. Might be called Bugis. Then walk down to boat quay and Clarke Quay. Both very cool spots along the river. For cheap eats just past arab street on the way to boat and clarke quays there are lots of little chinese places that have what's called a steamboat. Try them out all you can eat for a cheap price. Then hop back on the metro to go back to the airport. Lots to see walking around that area. |

I ended up there for about 8 hours..
Basically just caught the MRT into City Hall and walked around and checked out the foreshore...
It was nice |

I had a similar layover about two years ago. It was great to wander around all day in Singapore.
So much so that I'm going to be back there again in about week.. but two full days instead. |

The only problem was that it was a bit too hot to walk around outside in the day but in the early evening it is quite good |

For those who go..
Chinatown is great at night.. so many places to just wander around and eat.. as is 'Little India'.. even drank my beer watching a bellydancer last night perform.
There is also an arabic neighborhood and a malaysian one (geylang - which i hope to explore today). Everywhere seems to have nightlife and things to explore.
Great city.. so many pockets of really different stuff. |

I see the National University of Singapore is looking for teachers in their Language Centre....my old office mate lived there for 5 years and couldn't handle it because there was just one season - hot and humid!
Still, sounds like an interesting city.

Wouldn't be a bad place to live for awhile. But maybe a bit too much like home, and less like Asia - even though the mass majority of people are Asian.
In many ways, the city is like being back home in your western english-speaking country. Its also intriguing overhearing many people who have English sometimes as their second language communicating to each other in English. Maybe their main language is Hokkien or different regions of China or India or its Malaysia. They all use English - even if its all broken and strange-sounding, they don't have a choice because from so many different parts of even the same countries of origin. Its interesting.
There is a lot going on in the city, but nowhere near as intriguing/exotic as being in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Pehn or any of those places.
But you still have your Little India, Little China, Little Arabic neighborhood and Malay neighborhoods.. in that way, feels more western english-speaking country-ish. |
