Is Incheon a good place to teach? I'm thinking it's near Seoul, but perhaps the ferrys are prohibitive?

Otherwise, any posts about good cities to live in, or around Seoul are much appreciated!

Ferrys prohibitive? Erm, Incheon does have a lot of islands but most of it is on the mainland. It's a very spread out city, so some parts of Incheon have better access to public transportation than others.

Check a map, then do a search on this board, there are a ton of threads about Incheon. If you still have questions after that, post again.

Up at the top of the page there is a search function. You can search for old threads versus starting new ones. Some people get irritated when they see the same type of thread two or three weeks after a similar one was started. It doesn't bother me, but just wanted to let you know.

Anyway, I'm actually living in Incheon right now. Here are a few threads to look at:

Thanks for the linx, Dave. I posted about an hour before an interview with the school...English Village (from what I understand, a new branch). I looked at all these threads, nobody seems REAL thrilled to be living there.

Dave, what's your take on the city?

I don't mind living here, but it is a bit of a long trip to get into Seoul. If your close to Seoul Line 1 (note: there is also an Incheon Line 1, but that is a diffrent subway line), there is an express train that will cut some of the time off to get to Seoul.

Many people have said the pollution is worse, but it really depends on where in Incheon your at. There are some areas that are more industrial then others and thankfully I don't live near those places. On the whole, the pollution is about the same as Seoul.

Another thing to factor in is how old you are and what your hobbies are. If your younger and single, you might be more interested in the nightlife. Personally, I don't have any idea about nightclubs in the Incheon area. I'm older and married, so it quite diffrent for me.

There are grocery stores and movie theathers all over the place. The buses are diffrent and there is no online English information for the Incheon buses, so that can be a pain.

It really depends what your looking for though...

Actually, I did really enjoy living there, but I admit that I seemed to be the exception.

The neighborhood I was in, Gyeyang-gu, North Incheon was pretty convenient with easy access to both the subway and Samhwa Express buses going to Incheon. There was also a Walmart and a Carrefour there, although both chains are pulling out of Korea soon, and I met a really cool group of friends there.

Not all neighborhoods in Incheon are anywhere near that convenient, though. YMMV.

Of course, my happiness there was also colored by the fact that I was teaching only 5 hours a day on a block shift. With that much free time it's easy to be happy almost anywhere.

Yeah, my teaching is in blocks as well M 9-2 with an hour lunch, T/W 9-1, Th/F 9-12:10. I still stay at school until 4:40 though.

Son Deureo - everything I read on Korea in the CIA website said their economy is burgeoning...why is Wal-Mart pulling out? Did you say you met cool friends in Wal-mart? LOL

Consider yourself lucky I took the time to reply to your post at all, much less proof lead it.

LOL.

eastcoast,

You should do a flyover Incheon with Google Earth. You can easily see the industrial sections of the city by looking for buildings with blue roofs.

I live near Inha and it is not a bad neighbourhood. Lots of cheap places to eat and drink and the campus is quite green.

Wal-mart and Carrefour are leaving because they didn't understand the Korea market very well. At least, that is what I read in an article. But the building should be replaced with equally big stores...at least we can hope as there is a Carrefour across from Inha and it has been a godsend.

Hammer...I have no idea. I haven't seen any evidence that they are leaving yet. The shelves are still being filled, so who knows. Kind of waiting for a leaving sale...need some new appliances.

Anybody get the WSJ? Perhaps online...there was a good article about why Wal-Mart is pulling 82 stores from Germany (all failed). Ole' walmart might not get it overseas, but it's like church for the toothless rebels around me...yikes.

You know, I'm actually beginning to lean toward Incheon.

I won't do the google earth thing, though. I'm afraid of heights.
