I went to Yongsan today, in search of a laptop, although i put across what i wanted, whether anyone understood is another matter, anyway this is what i was after:

Hp notebook
memory 1024
hdd 40gb
dvd/cd rw combo
2 ports
wireless
processor-intel pentium 4 or amd athlon
xp operating system

the guy i spoke to had all this, and said it would cost 2m won? does that sound right? Im not even sure whether he was telling the truth but i had a good look and it seemed about right, i will be going back to buy one, but will take a korean friend who can speak english and make sure it has everything i want.

If anyone can help, please do, also i found alot of the laptops were pretty cheap there, anyone think otherwise?

Sounds a little overpriced even compared to Home Plus or E-mart.

You can get a decent entry level laptop for around 1 million or a little less. You can get a kick-ass desktop system (with LCD monitor) for the same million.

You can get a decent entry level desktop for about 600k won including CRT monitor.

For 2 million you you should get a higher mid-level or low high-level laptop.

My machine:
dual core P4D CPU
DVD burner,
250 gig HDD,
1 gig RAM,
Nvida 6200 - 256MB video card,
4 USB 2.0 ports,
10/100/1000 LAN,
5.1 sound,

Cost me just over 600k won to build.

Why on earth would you spend 2 million for a laptop? If you are a business person who needs it for mobile computing I could understand.
If you are a teacher, then WTF????

The common excuse that I hear people use to justify a laptop:
"If I buy a desktop, what will I do with it when my year is up and it is time to go home? I can just take a laptop with me!"

My answer to that is:
"With the million won you saved by NOT getting a laptop you can spend 100k won and courier it home when the time has come and use the other 900k won for a well earned vacation on the beach after your contract is done."

AND as an edit to this post, Home Plus is selling IBM thinkpads with a 1.5 gHz CPU, 1 gig RAM, DVD/CDR combo drive for 990k won as of this evening.

Well, Mr. Article-writer, who, uses, way, too, many, commas...It's not a laptop he's talking about. That, and if it were a laptop, it would blow your machine away. Also...all the work you mentioned can be done on a P3 400 celeron machine. Except the "amonst other things"........maybe....

Razz

Go here and find the one you want. The prices are pretty accurate.

What the heck? The guy is only trying to help.

I already have a notebook and I am sort of itching for a replacement, but when I think about how much I could save by buying a desktop, that extra 1 million is going to be soooo handy to have around at the end of the year.

DVD rom which is also a cd writer.

My laptop:

Pentium 4 Dual Core 2500
1gb Ram
100gb HD
ATi X1400 (256mb) vid card
17 inch screen (yep it's a beast but I love it)
Integrated Audio (I just use headphones anyways)
Wireless/NiC built in.
Windows XP
DVD+-RW/CD+-RW Drive

I decided to buy a Dell, from back in N/A and had it sent to my parents, who then mailed it to me (took about 10 days to get it here from time of order until time I got it) Cost me about 1600 USD with a 3 year Complete Care contract - Thats including having it UPS'ed here to me in Korea.

What they're quoting you for what you're getting isn't worth it -- no way.

Just have to say that for a guy who professes to 'write articles' (the, an, a?), your typing skills seem to be a tad lacking.
