OK Girlies...

I have a question for you.

I've only been in Seoul a week, and I've had one experience with a creepy guy from africa. I'm reading through these posts and I see a *lot* of referances to similar experiences.

Anyone know why? Is it a cultural thing? What the heck is going on? The african guys I met in the states were pretty normal, but they were from S.A. or Kenya.

Stay away from Nigerians. They're the extra-creepy ones with the intense serial-rapist gaze that come up to you in bars with lines like, "Are you ok? You seem upset." Ignore them. Don't be nice or they'll take it as a sign that you want to "get to know them," i.e. sex/marriage/enslavement, etc.

Didn't the Nigerians have a kick ass mafia going there in Itaewon? Even all the Korean businesses were paying them...

Africans are cool. Mostly laid back and easygoing. Usually a lot more complex once you get to know them but.

I've met African guys here from all over the continent, and had all sorts of different experiences. The only generalization I can make is that I can't always expect an African guy to be "just friends" with me. There have been exceptions, of course, but for the most part I think they just don't have a grid for that sort of thing, and it frustrates me. I don't think these guys get how intimidating and weird it is to be pressed so ardently for a date/phone number/name, or to hear "Where are you? I won't come to your table-- I just want to see your face." I'm not talking about the scumbags who attacked Crazylemongirl, of course-- there's cultural friction, and then there's just evil.

In our culture, we have certain expectations about pacing, subtlety, respect. Most African cultures have a different grid for male-female relationships, and when we meet on neutral ground (neither "Western" nor "African") it's hard to find a common ground.

I'd like to keep giving people the benefit of the doubt, returning friendly smiles, and learning more about people no matter where they are from. However, I've learned from experience to do this on my own terms, in a way that's safe, and that doesn't assume everyone thinks as I do.

Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead.

Cool

ahem. No i don't know zed. Although I have hung out with Nigerians a few times here. Had fun. Although I guess western women might find some of their advances a bit unusual/offputting, most Nigerians are Ok.

I'm sorry, but you're just stupid. I really tried to choose a more polite choice of words and I couldn't.

When will girls start to understand that the idea of men and women being "friends" is totally different amongst the male and female perspective?

Sure most women like the idea of having a guy friend. But most men play the friendship card with the ultimate goal of having sex with the girl.

Jesus Christ! Wise up girl. You're naievity may have been understandable when you were a teenager, however you're an adult now and stupidity takes its place.

Why is it that everyone from developed nations choose to class everyone from the continent of Africa as Africans and not by their actual nation?
Africa is probably the most diverse continent on this planet. It is a continent of great beauty and many different people, yet Westerners do them the disrespect of classifying them all as 'Africans'. Next thing you'll be saying is that they all go hunting elephants, or they all have Aids, or all of them dance around fires chanting for the rains to fall.

I have African relatives. They get greatly offended when people classify them as just African, and not Morrocan, Egyptian ,etc

WHile I agree, how many people know enough about Africa to be able to do that? It is funny though some people here get angry when we are all classified as foreigners but label an entire continent of countries only as the continent . Still, like I said, most people can't really do anything else. And to be honest, Africa just isn't very important to us, so we are not about to start learning enough detail to classify each person by their respective countries.

Exactly! Its so ridiculous to hear koreans and Americans refer to Africa as a country. I had that last week, they were amazed to find there are actually 62 countries in Africa. Theres more ethnic/linguistic diversity in one corner of South Africa than there is from here to Moscow.
