I've been offered a job in OSS in Jeju (in Jeju city).

Anyone hear anything good or bad about them?

Check out Englishschoolwatch.org

and also this one

http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~jonb/intro_warning.html

Then contact some previous teachers if that's possible. If the school won't give you some contact information then.....be worried.

Quoted from the blacklist,

A teacher here had several contract disputes with the director over salary and holidays. Wages are sometimes paid late, and the last month's salary and severance money were not given to one teacher.

A teacher was fired from this hagwon just before completing his contract so that he wouldn't get severance pay.

The OSS Chain has a less than stellar reputation. Many of the schools in that chain have been blacklisted over the last 5 or so years. Do a search.

Check with the current teachers about conditions at that particular academy. Talk to MORE THAN ONE teacher. Get their e-mails so you can talk to them when the boss isn't looking over their shoulder.

ASK specific questions about NHIC medical, pension, OVERTIME and creative book-keeping to avoid paying overtime. They USUALLY (heresay from teachers I knew who worked at that chain) never paid any of these.
Ask about the number of classes per day, per week and per month.
Ask about class time length and calculation of teaching hours. (reports of up to 140 classes per month).
ASK about required time in the school (unpaid management/prep time).
ASK about holidays - when and how long for each break.
ASK about housing - size and condition. Don't accept shared housing.

If you don't ask, then be prepared for a long and ugly year.

I've (actually all of the foreign teachers) had a really bad experience at an Oh Sung Shik in Daegu. I don't know if that extends to the rest of the franchise, but I would be very careful about signing anything. Try to talk to as many people as possible who have worked in the place.

i know this is related to an old post but i work for oss in changwon and they have been nothing but professional in their dealings with me even going beyond what my contract stipulates as regards hours, class times and generally helping me settle into the job and korea itself.like some say, some of the franchise is bad but try not to tarnish it all with the same brush.if the op took the job in jeju, let us know what you think of it. i hope the situation for the daegu teachers improves. as it is a shame that my school has to share the name of a hagwon that is less than proffesional.

That particular branch in Jeju (if it's the one I'm thinking of), is a good one from everything I've heard. I've talked to the previous teacher, and she is leaving on good terms. Plus, the owner is one of my wife's friends from high school.

If you have any questions, I can dig up some e-mails for ya or help ya out. Just PM me.
