I was there last week, it's so hot most of that time that there's not much going on around the streets because everyone's indoors.
There are no bars except for the ones in hotels, although some of the local restaurants were pretty good. The Corniche area is nice, but again, strolling around isn't much fun because of the heat (even at night it's 35+ and humid like the inside of a sponge).
The best thing I did was go to the desert in a 4x4- sliding around on the dunes, it was pretty good until I threw up all over the sand. Went swimming in the inland sea- which was so hot it was like a bath.
It was fairly interesting to see how things are in a muslim country, but not all that much going on really.
Maybe wait until the Asian games are on in December?
