I walked by two kids today, maybe about 4 (girl) and 5 or 6 (boy). They said hello like normal (as kids do) and went back to fighting over a stuffed bear (don't know how it didn't rip in two). Anyways, as I was passing them, the boy says, "SHUT UP! SIT DOWN!" to his sister. I guess their teacher must say that a lot |

But I have been told that you should NEVER, EVER say SHUT UP to children because SHUT UP in Korean is almost as bad as *beep* off. |

Oh, I have never, ever said shut up to any of my classes. I have never, ever felt the need to. Be quiet has always worked for me. I might have to raise my voice a bit, but shut up to me is way too strong and there has never been a situation, especially with kids that I have needed to use it. But someone must be with these two kids I passed (I don't know these kids). If he just said shut up, I could assume he learned it from TV or a movie, but with the "sit down" added with it, it seems suspicious It's still funny though. |

Well, it probably wasn't a serious fight, otherwise the kid would've used the latter. A good teacher would explain the difference. |

One time when I got really, really, really pissed off and I'd said "be quiet" and "quiet please" about 15,000,000 times.
I totally snapped and managed to get out "Sh" before I clamped my mouth shut. |

That's because Koreans often translate "입닥쳐" as "shut up." In fact, shut up is "입다물어." 입닥쳐 is best translated as shut the **** up."

I wish I had known that before I said it in jest to one of my students. Then he started crying...one of my favorites. |
