Seoul is 4th-dearest in business travel poll
Business visitors to Seoul need $447 (470,000 won) per day in living expenses at a five-star hotel, according to a report by Business Travel News quoted by the Korea National Tourism Organization yesterday. Tokyo was Asia's dearest, at $612 per day, followed by Hong Kong and Osaka. The cheapest destination for a traveler who wants the best, Kuala Lumpur, the survey said, at only $166 per day.

Seoul is expensive if you stay in 5 start hotels, and eat in the very best restaurants. For Joe citizen though, Seoul isn't expensive.

The resident DJ will be along shortly and prove to all that Seoul is more expensive than London.

The tourism group cited the survey in support of its complaint that high prices are deterring tourism here.

Does Joe citizen buy food, clothes, household goods, and entertainment?

Seoul Ranked World's Fifth Most Expensive City
Prices in Seoul were the fifth highest in a survey of 144 world cities. The international consulting firm Mercer Human Resource Consulting (MHRC) said Monday its survey showed Tokyo unchallenged at the top, with Osaka climbing from fourth to second. It collects data in about 200 categories like housing, food, clothes, household goods, transport fees and entertainment costs. It computes the indexes using New York as its 100 benchmark.

Seoul can be extremely expensive - fruit, groceries (at least from E-mart etc) and electronics are bloody expensive to say the least. Actually, fruit isn't if you know where to go, but even then it's certainly more expensive than my country of origin. But in terms of eating K-food, subway, taxis, drinking...Seoul is cheap as chips. And when you get paid a Seoul salary, it's not expensive generally although would be if you bought six bags of groceries from Emart every week! Shocked Comparing the price of bread in one city to another is always pointless, as $200 per month in Romania would get you further than $2000 per month in Tokyo, as I'm sure those stats take into account.

It's not the world's fifth expensive city. The survey you refered to only looks at about 150 different cities, and it is used as a guide to determine how much allowance those on business trips should be given by their companies when on a business trip. Most cities in England are more expensive than Seoul, but only London appears in the list. (they don't look at any other cities in England)
