Ya-ta Boy's thread on "you're" has given me the courage to speak up.

It's not "definately." It's "definitely." Think about it. Which looks better, "definate" or "definite?"

I've never seen this word misspelt so much anywhere else before.

RACETRAITOR, I now realise you're just a babe in swaddling on this board. DaechidongWaygukin had a thread that went over 15 pages on this topic. It was extremely raucous and, I think, eventually locked & maybe yanked. The "Definately Thread" has become a right of passage for every generation of posters, it seems.

It still needs to be repeated until everyone gets it right. As far as spelling goes, it's an easy one.

Sorry. Spelling and grammar have never been my strongest assets.

I got another one that's common on this board: using "it's" when it should be "its."

Actually there just seems to be an overuse of apostrophes when they are just plain wrong. I hear this has become common in the English - speaking world, even on business signs and public notices.

Maybe the internet and text messaging have made us worse at our language? People are writing stuff like "c u l8r" and other such nonsense.

Every dog has its day.

Interesting list here:

Okay, that's cool, but most of the other people who post on here teach English for a living. I'm guessing you must have some other sort of job then...?

I used to teach adult literacy and technical writing (for native speakers), and I helped people remember how to spell definitely by reminding them that the word may be related to 'finite'. The etymology may be dodgy, but the mnemonic is good.

Throw rediculous on that list as well. Yes, it sounds like red. No, it's not spelled red.

Doesn't actually bother me, but thought I'd chip in a buck fiddy.

If we all used "sure nuff", it would be easier.

Let's confess to our weak areas of English.....

...I'm unsure when to use commas in longer sentences. I don't remember ever being taught that lesson. I was an elementary student in the UK in the enlightened 70's when the focus was taken off strict grammar and put on creative writing and thinking. Meaning, I was never told where comma's should go. I was asked where I think they went!!

So yeah. Commas and apostrophes cause me to double-think now and then. I also hyphenise (hyphenize) too much!

I'm not blaming my early education. It's something I should work on now. Today.
